The announcement of the thirteenth doctor has been majorly anticipated, with many months of speculation, guessing, wishing and hoping on who would take over from Peter Capaldi on the BBC Show.
So, who is the new doctor, and the first one under new show-runner Chris Chibnall? Broadchurch star Jodie Whittaker – a name we didn’t guess but definitely should’ve!

Whittaker portrayed Beth Latimer in Chibnall’s own crime drama series since 2013, and it seems he wasn’t done with her after that show ended. She was also fantastic in Black Mirror in perhaps the show’s most obliterating episode, as well as the cult sci-fi film Attack the Block, Broadchurch, and also starred former doctor David Tennant!
This casting is a real milestone for the series, where the lead role has been a male since 1963. Since the casting of Michelle Gomez as the Master, and several hints and references towards it in the past six seasons, it became increasingly likely that the role of the Doctor could, and might someday go to a woman. And obviously we’re thrilled that that day is now – especially with it being with such a fantastic actor.
While it will surely have its share of detractors, the show is over 50 years old and needs some change – and this one is perhaps a little overdue. The Doctor is a hero for everyone, and just as many women love the show as men – in 2017 especially, having as many heroes as possible appeal to as many people as possible is nothing but a positive thing, or even a necessity, and many people agree:

Capaldi, who took the role in 2013, will leave in the 2017 Christmas special.
The Glasgow-born star told the BBC: “I feel it’s time to move on. I feel sad, I love Doctor Who, it is a fantastic programme to work on.” He also recently told Radio Times that his regeneration as the Time Lord would be “more complicated than recent ones”.
While we’re always sad to see the current doctor step down, we’re all very excited to see where Whittaker can take the series!
