As we’ve all grown older, we’re realising more and more how many innuendos were hidden in plain sight in our favourite, treasured cartoons. Our childhood faves are riddled with them, and we’re about to take a look at 9 shocking moments that may just ruin your childhood forever.
1. Grandpa Lou’s favourite video in Rugrats
Ah, the Rugrats. Hands down one of the best and wackiest cartoons of the 90s. They just don’t make them like this anymore – but er, excuse me Grandpa Lou? We know exactly what’s in that video, please remember you’re talking to a couple of babies!
2. The Genie from Aladdin
“I thought the Earth wasn’t supposed to move until the honeymoon!” Once you’re old enough and start paying attention, Disney has a fine selection of innuendos and this is just one of them. How do they sneak them past the censors?!
3. Shrek’s jokes
Oh dear, Shrek. But don’t worry, this joke went as far over Donkey’s head as it did when we were kids!
4. Donald Duck’s interrupted sleep
This isn’t at all what it looks like but SURELY they must have noticed what it does look like. Erm. This is from the episode “Wide Open Spaces” in 1947, and you won’t be able to unsee it ever again.
5. A suspicious poster in Hey Arnold!
The wacky 90s cartoons are back, and this particular sign just goes to show it only ever got wackier. In the episode “The Eating Contest”, there is a rather awkwardly placed poster that only now is grabbing our attention as out of the ordinary for a children’s cartoon.
6. Something horrifying in the Three Little Pigs
The happy and supposedly innocent ending to the Disney animated version of this classic tale really shocked us with that “portrait” in the background. We get that it was supposed to be funny, but it’s really dark when you think about it.
7. Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck’s rather adult reading material
Oh my! That is quite a choice of magazine when you’re a children’s cartoon character. They’re both having a look at a “Playduck” magazine, and now we all understand the joke. The sultry sounding music in the background of the scene really isn’t helping, either!
8. SpongeBob Innuendo Pants
In general. the SpongeBob Squarepants series has a vast selection of innuendos, including this one from the episode “The Play’s the Thing”. Here, SpongeBob is blowing up a number of balloons so he can build a balloon version of Squidward. But for a moment it looks like – well, um, something else that definitely shouldn’t be shown on kid’s TV.
9. Shaggy and Scooby-Doo
Alright, so this one’s a bit of a far stretch, but if you’ve got a particularly dirty mind we all know where it’s going right now.
