Corrie legend Jean Alexander has passed away.
The actress who played Hilda Ogden in the soap has died today aged 90.
She was apparently taken to hospital on Tuesday this week which was on her 90th birthday, after complaining about feeling unwell.
Her niece said that she had gone into hospital for tests last weekend as family gathered to celebrated her birthday
She had originally been discharged before being taken back in on Tuesday.
‘I saw her last week and she seemed weak and a bit tired but this was still a shock,’ she said.
Originally born Jean Hodgkinson, the actress was born in Liverpool in 1926. She worked in a library as an assistant before going into acting in 1949.
Originally she played the part of Mrs Webb in Coronation Street back in 1962. She then returned to the show as a cleaner named Hilda Ogden two years later.
Hilda went on to become one of the most beloved characters in the history of the soap, with Jean staying in Weatherfield for 23 years before Hilda hung up her cleaning overalls for good in 1987.
The character was so popular that Jean was flooded with condolence cards after the death of her screen husband Stan Ogden – played by Bernard Youens – in 1984.
RIP Jean. You were a true star!
