Police in Blackpool recently released an image captured on CCTV of a man stealing from a restaurant who just so happens to be David Schwimmer’s doppelgänger. And, as you can probably guess, the internet went into a frenzy.
Within hours, the picture went viral with in excess of over 130,000 people sharing, commenting and posting hilarious captions and quotes from Friends likening the thief to Schwimmer’s popular alter ego, Ross Geller.
One person wrote: “Shouldn’t he be at work … or is he on a break?”
Another commented: “I bet he was shouting ‘PIVOT’ as he picked those beers up.”
And so on…
“Blackpool Police think they can mess with us? They don’t know that we know they know we know it’s Ross. The messers become the messies!”
“Being mistaken for a criminal… it is not that common, it doesn’t happen to every guy and it IS a big deal!!!”
If you’ve not seen the post yourself and you’re a big Friends fan, then it’s definitely worth checking out via the Blackpool Police’s Facebook page.
And, in a hilarious turn of events, Schwimmer himself decided to wade in to the action and clear his name of any wrong doing by posting a brilliant response video.
In the clip he posted to both Twitter and Instagram, the Friends star recreates the image caught on CCTV with his own rendition. He carries a crumpled crate of beers down the aisle, before glancing up in the camera and pulling the same gormless face seen in the original version.
Along with the video, Schwimmer wrote “Officers, I swear it wasn’t me”.
“As you can see, I was in New York”
“To the hardworking Blackpool Police, good luck with the investigation.”
And with that, he further reinforced his position as one of the few celebrities that doesn’t take themselves too seriously.
Police had rather comically had to officially confirm that the actor wasn’t in the UK at the time of the incident, just in case anyone out there thought his career had taken such a nosedive that he’d resorted to stealing from a restaurant in a small English seaside town…
But, Schwimmer didn’t want anyone doubting the authorities… so he decided to share some ‘evidence’ of his whereabouts at the time and the result is hilarious.
Ah, Ross we love you! As does the rest of the Internet it seems, with his response already being liked over 200,000 times in less than 24 hours!
In all seriousness though, the alleged thief is wanted for stealing a jacket, wallet and mobile phone from Mr Basrai’s restaurant and if anyone has any information that the Police might find useful, the please don’t hesitate to get in touch with them.
