Do you know what Thalassophobia even means? Well, obviously the ‘phobia’ part on the end there gives you a big clue! So it’s obviously a fear of something, but a fear of what, I hear you ask?
Lassos? Thailand? No, the name actually doesn’t give anything away at all, so, do you want me to tell you?
The god of internet knowledge, ‘Wikipedia’, defines Thalassophobia as “an intense and persistent fear of the sea or of sea travel.
Thalassophobia can include fear of being in large bodies of water, fear of the vast emptiness of the sea, of sea waves, and fear of distance from land.”
So there you have it… and now you’re probably wondering whether or not you have it. Well, we’re here to help you make up your mind on that…because we’re nice…and we like trying to scare the sh*t out of people!
Enjoy your new phobia, kids!
1. Does seeing this make you uncomfortable?
View this post on Instagram
Well, it certainly scares the sh*te out of me! So, if your answer is yes, I’m with you, buddy! Jeez! It’s beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but it’s also, really, really scary!
2. What lies beneath…
Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, NOOOOOOPE!
Who can honestly go swimming in the sea and not freak out every time something brushes their leg? The ‘Jaws’ movie has a lot to answer for!
3. Did you ever have an irrational childhood fear of a shark lurking right below you in a pool?
I did, personally, especially when I was very young. I used to believe that a shark could somehow get through the air vents (I know, I know…) and would come and eat me up. I was a very anxious kid though, so, you know…
4. A huge, vast nothing…
Are we feeling uncomfortable yet!? Because I certainly am.
5. What do pictures like this do to your anxiety levels?
I personally don’t find this one so bad, even though he’s obviously perched on some kind of huge ship or aircraft propeller (I’m not good at identifying machinery, okay!?) Although I think I’d feel differently if I could see the whole thing, as it where and how vast the water must be for it to hold such a huge ship.
6. Dun dun, dun dun…
Oooooooh, Jesus! This reminds me of a nightmare I had once. I think most of us by now can probably agree that we have a new phobia in Thalassophobia, but let’s carry on and keep scaring ourselves witless anyway…you know, just for some extra confirmation.
7. Just imagine being on a boat and seeing this lurking just below the water…
Wow, actually, let’s not, eh!? I love how I started out trying to scare you guys and all I’ve done is manage to scare the living cr*p out of myself… #karma
8. Or try to imagine diving deep down into the ocean and finding this ominous sign…
Well, all I can say is, you wouldn’t have to tell me twice! I’d be out of there faster than the Flash in scuba gear! #kbye
9. Or, we could think about all the ocean is hiding…
To be honest, this picture makes me more worried about air travel than anything else. I think I’m cancelling my holiday for next month!
10. Aw, hello little guy…..arrrrrgh!
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure that this creepy dude is just a seal…but, that doesn’t mean that I’d be hanging around long enough to confirm that assumption. #seeyaseal
11. & What about everything that rises to the top…?
Gah! I genuinely don’t know what that is! Is it real!? Wow. I’d be outta there as fast as my weak little legs could carry me!
12. Are we getting scared yet?
Well, you should be! This kid is literally 100,000,000 times braver than I ever will be! Just think of all the nasties that could come and eat your toes off! Nada, no, no!
13. I think I feel a little sick…
Okay, I get the whole ‘scared of the vastness’ thing now…but from the comfort of being on dry land, this is actually ethereally beautiful, however, I doubt I’d feel the same if I was the one taking the pic!
14. Please don’t eat me!
Oh my god! Nessie is that you!?
15. You crazy sea worm!
Is that a Snake or some kind of mad, mutated sea worm!? I actually feel so sorry for that poor fish, for suffering at the ends of that long, creepy b*tch!
16. It’s just terrifying really, isn’t it!?
You’re not getting me, Jaws! I don’t care how many movies they’ve made about you, that doesn’t give you the right to bite my legs off and use them as Chopsticks!
17. Just imagine if we were on this tiny, tiny boat…
Well, as long as I was actually on the boat, then I think I’d be okay! Well, I think okay is a bit of an overestimation…but no matter how much I freak out, just keep me on the god damn boat guys!
18. Imagine diving into this…?
You could genuinely pay me about £10,000,000,000,000 and I still wouldn’t dive into this. Although, I could see the temptation, if you were crazy and into this kind of thing, it’s terrifyingly beautiful!
19. Imagine seeing an animal so big, you can’t even comprehend it!?
This huge creature could easily crush this boat if he wanted to, so let’s just hope that he’s a stunning, gentle giant…for their sake!
20. So, do you have Thalassophobia!?
Well, if you guys don’t, I certainly do!
Don’t have nightmares, kids!
