I think we’re going to be forever finding hidden easter eggs in the Harry Potter series, such is the cleverness of J.K. Rowling. Rowling is able to pull the wool over the eyes of even the most eagle-eyed Potterheads! It’s got to be magic, right?
The latest uncovered gem is that Rupert Grint has a sneaky shout-out in Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince!
Rupert Grint played Ron Weasley for all eight of the Harry Potter films, but since has become more easily forgotten than Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson.
Similarly, in the books, Ron often fell by the wayside while Harry and Hermione dazzled and amazed us. For example, in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Professor Slughorn (the new potions professor) is enchanted by students that display extraordinary ability.
Obviously, Slughorn is quickly taken by Harry and is easily impressed by Hermione. But Ron, to Slughorn, is just another student, easily forgotten and just part of the masses.
J.K. used the opportunity cleverly, since, at one point, Slughorn forgets Ron so entirely that he gets his name wrong. He calls him Rupert!
In the book, after Ron is poisoned from drinking Slughorn’s wine, the professor and Harry are discussing the incident and why someone would want to poison the Potions professor…
“‘I have had it all tested for poison,’ he assured Harry pouring most of the first bottle into one of Hagrid’s bucket-sized mugs and handing it to Hagrid. ‘Had a house-elf taste every bottle after what happened to your poor friend Rupert.’”
What a sneaky little nod in Rupert Grint’s direction! While some people think that the hidden messages Rowling slips into her franchise are less than entertaining, they’re a lot of fun for die-hard Potter fans to find and share!
