Actor Jim Carrey was approached by E! New’s Catty Sadler for a red carpet interview at the Harper’s Bazaar party in New York. While she tried to run it as a regular interview, his answers were less than normal.
When she tried to question him he immediately called the whole event “meaningless” saying: “There’s no meaning to any of this. So I wanted to find the most meaningless thing that I could come to and join and here I am.”
Sadler pointed out that the party was to celebrate icons, including actors like himself he responded: “I don’t believe in icons. […] I don’t believe in personalities. I believe that peace lies beyond personalities, beyond invention and disguise, beyond the red S you wear on your chest, that makes bullets bounce off.” Which is a paraphrased version of a commencement speech he gave at Maharishi University of Management in Iowa in 2014.
When Stadler asked about his outfit, a black shirt and a smart blue printed blazer that actor claimed he hadn’t dressed up for the occasion. He claimed “I didn’t get dressed up.There is no me. There’s just things happening.” Surprised to find he just casually dresses like that but okay, sure.
When Stadler tried to turn the interview to current events, something he might find meaningful in our world he responded: “It’s not our world, we don’t matter, We don’t matter.” Before walking away.
Some people have been calling it a stunning insight into our world, while others have said it’s a shallow attempt at being deep, and a watered down version of nihilism. Personally, I wouldn’t trust Jim Carrey to have any deeper understanding about the world, seeing as he still believes vaccines cause autism, an idea that was shot down after the one doctor who made the connection admitted to being paid off to lie about it.
If Carrey truly believes the event was meaningless, there seems little point in going to it just to complain. He could have easily stayed home, wearing the same outfit that he totally didn’t dress up in, and made a post on social media. Maybe he just wanted to show of his freshly shaved beard.
Perhaps it is going deeper though, he’s standing trial in 2018 over the possibility of his causing the suicide of his ex-wife Cathriona White.who died in 2018. Her mother Mrs Sweetman alleges that Jim gave her daughter three sexually transmitted diseases and supplied the drugs she used to overdose.
Pretending to be going through some kind of deeper understanding about the world is a great way to deflect attention from something that could have a serious career impact.
