Sister Sledge singer Joni dies at 60

The singer Joni Sledge who was part of the world famous Sister Sledge, has died aged 60.

Sister Sledge were well known for many classic hits but the most famous is probably “We Are Family”.

Joni formed the group with her three siblings in 1971. Reports have broken today that she was found unresponsive by a friend at her home in Phoenix, Arizona.


Currently it is a bit of a mystery as she had not been ill and no official reason has been publicised. Her death was announced on social media today, just a week before the group was due to perform in an LA concert.

“Yesterday, numbness fell upon our family,” a statement released on Facebook read.

“We are saddened to inform you that our dear sister, mother, aunt, niece and cousin, Joni passed away yesterday.”


It added: “We miss her and hurt for her presence, her radiance, and the sincerity with which she loved and embraced life.”

As well as “We Are Family”,  which sold more than a million copies after it was released in 1978, Sister Sledge are also very well known for their other hits He’s the Greatest Dancer, Lost in Music and a cover of the Motown classic My Guy.
