Student Walks 20 Miles To Avoid Being Late For Work, So The CEO Gifts Him A Car

In an unbelievable show of determination, a college student decided to walk 20 miles to make sure he wasn’t late to his new job working for Belhop Movers.

Walter Carr, a student from Alabama took the decision upon himself to risk exhaustion walking through the suburbs of Birmingham after his own vehicle broke down the night before.

Rather than risk making a bad impression on his first day, he set out from his home at midnight, a full eight hours before he was due to start in order to give himself enough time to walk the 20+ mile distance.

Whilst part way through his journey, he encountered a group of Pelham Police officers who were curious as to his story. At this point, it was roughly 4am and Walter had covered quite some distance. The officers on duty decided to take the young man for a bite to eat and a cup of coffee. Which, I’m sure he was pretty freakin’ happy about at that time.

They then took Walter to his first assignment, a house belonging to customer Jenny Lamey. The BBC reported that once she found out about his journey, she told him to get some shut eye and rest for a little while but incredibly, he refused and insisted on beginning work straight away.

As the two began to converse, Jenny learnt more of Walter’s background and his humbling story that had brought him to the area in the first place. He spent his childhood in New Orleans, but after the devastating force of Hurricane Katrina destroyed his family’s home, he moved to Alabama.

She was so astounded by the young man that she knew she had to do something for him.

On a Facebook post describing the events, she said:

“I can’t imagine how many times on that lonely walk… in the middle of the night did he want to turn back. How many times did he wonder if this was the best idea.”

“But he walked until he got here! I am in total awe of this young man!”

She decided to set up a GoFundMe  page to help raise enough money to fix Walters car so he never had to make another freakin’ journey like that again.

But, after news of the story went viral, other people had different ideas.

Luke Marklin, the CEO of Bellhops (the company Walter works for) drove to Alabama from Tennessee  after hearing about his impressive attitude and perseverance and decided make a gesture even more generous.

During the encounter between the two, he said:

“So, this is my car and I drive it just, barely”

“And, I’d like it to be your car”

“And I really think it’s in much better hands with you than it is with me”

Luke then proceeds to hand over the car to Walter, who at this point has an absolutely gobsmacked look painted across his face.

He also said:

I am honestly blown away by him. Everything he did that day is exactly who we are – heart and grit.

Walter, stunned into near silence responded in shock “Seriously?!”, before taking the keys from Luke and giving him an emotional hug.

And, when speaking to WMBA, Luke also went on to say:

“Decisions in your life that are sometimes big and that you make pretty quickly because they’re the right thing to do — and this was one of them.”

“As well as the new car, the GoFundMe page has so far raised over $32,000 which, Jenny has confirmed will be managed by a wealth firm to ‘help [Walter] plan, save and manage these funds’.”

Walter said this whilst speaking to

“This was the first job in a long time to give me an opportunity to get hired,’‘ he said. “I wanted to show them I got the dedication. I said I’m going to get to this job one way or another.”

“I want people to know this – no matter what the challenge is, you can break through the challenge. Nothing is impossible unless you make it impossible,”.

“You can do anything you set your mind to. I’ve got God by my side. I’m really emotional right now trying to hold back the tears.”

Walter revealed that his plans after finishing college are to go on to support his countries military by joining the Marines. And do you know what? I think he’s just what they’re looking for…

Hard-working, determined and doesn’t shy away from a challenge.

Walter, I salute you!
