Thanks to films like American Psycho, we tend to think of psychopaths as social outsiders, weirdos, and sometimes, even killers and maniacs. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Psychopathy isn’t as rare as you think. In fact, according to psycholigists, you could be on good terms with a psychopath and not even know it. They could be a friend, a colleague, or even a relative, and like with other psychological disorders, just because someone is on the spectrum doesn’t mean they’re a violent criminal.
Psychopathy is characterised by a lack of empathy, and a trouble conforming to authority and societal norms. These people tend to feel emotions only shallowly, but often psychopathic traits, such as the ability to turn on the charm at will and to successfully manipulate others, can be an advantage.
