Top Gun’s Kelly McGillis Makes Rare Public Appearance During Filming of Sequel

Kelly McGillis is well-known to Top Gun fans for her stand-out performance as Maverick’s flying instructor Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Blackwood. She also starred in other 80s hits including the crime thriller Witness (1985) and gritty courtroom drama The Accused (1988), but since then she seems to have dropped off the radar.

However, she recently made a rare public outing in Hendersonville, North Carolina, where she currently resides. Despite admitting that she’d love to have a cameo in the sequel, McGillis still hasn’t travelled to the film set in San Diego to join her fellow actors.

Instead, she spent her weekend volunteering at the First Congregational Church, near her rural home in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Even though McGillis hasn’t been gracing the red carpet in recent years, she has continued acting across film, TV and theatre. Her most recent work saw her act in thriller Mother Of All Secrets (2017) alongside actress Kate Mansi. She has previously worked in the theatre, starring in a Broadway production of The Graduate as Mrs Robinson, whilst also finding time to devote to charity work.

McGillis has been working full-time with drug addicts and alcoholics at Seabrook House Drug Alcohol Rehab Center, a rehabilitation centre located in Bridgeton, New Jersey.

However, her recent emergence has sent the Top Gun 2 rumour-mill into overdrive. Some media sources are speculating about the timing of her appearance, given that filming of the long-awaited sequel was recently announced by leading man Tom Cruise on Twitter.

So will Kelly be joining her former cast-mates in the reboot? We’ll have to wait and see. However, The Wrap already reported last week that Val Kilmer will be reprising his role as Iceman.

Kilmer hinted at his involvement way back in 2015 on his official Facebook account.

‘Offered ‪#‎topgun2‬ — not often you get to say ‘yes’ without reading the script…’ he said.

He then added: ‘This is a long way off so calm down. This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role.

I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the topgun…an innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent.’

The original film grossed $357 million worldwide, so producers will be hoping to replicate that success with the sequel. Top Gun 2 is scheduled for release on July 12th, 2019. We’ll make sure to keep you posted with any new developments!
