Will Smith May Be Cast As The Genie In The New ‘Aladdin’ Live-Action Movie

With Guy Ritchie set to direct the upcoming live-action movie of Aladdin, there’s a lot of questions on our minds. One of which is outstandingly important – who exactly is going to play the Genie now that Robin Williams is sadly no longer with us?

The movie is already on the right tracks with plans to aim for diverse casting, but the Genie is one of the most iconic characters in the film and up until now we haven’t had any answers on who’s going to make an attempt to fill Robin Williams’ shoes.

Well, until now that is. The Hollywood Reporter has recently suggested that Will Smith is in talks about playing the part. It’s early days yet, but there’s definitely a chance that the charismatic actor may just land the role – he was already circling the live-action version of Dumbo, but being cast as the Genie in Aladdin could make this everyone’s first priority.

But can Will Smith live up to Robin Williams’ name? Smith’s career is taking a few hits, with a number of disasters in the box office department. Maybe this could be the movie that breaks the cycle of disappointment.

Of course, we can almost guarantee that there’s going to be an entirely new spin on the Genie since Williams took the part if Guy Ritchie has anything to do with it – which he does. The movie will remain a musical, however.

When speaking to VultureSean Bailey, Disney’s president of Motion Picture Production, had this to say about how re-imagining the story of Aladdin is being approached by the filmmakers:

“Guy became interested in doing a Disney movie and we talked a lot about it. When we talked about Aladdin, he said, ‘My stories are really about street hustlers. That’s what I know how to do. And Aladdin is a classic street hustler who makes good.’

“Guy’s got his own version of that story in his life. But he wanted to honor and respect the Disney of it all,” Bailey said. “We never want to feel like we have a playbook to these things because we worry it’ll make us creatively complacent. The idea of a highly energized Guy Ritchie Disney musical felt like, Oh, we haven’t done that before.”

And with Emma Stone apparently up for playing Cruella De Vil at some point, it looks like we have a vast collection of Disney live-action remakes on the way.
