17 Celebrity Couples Who Had A Messy Break Up But Still Had To Work Together

Celebrities, they’re just like us! (No, really, they are.) They eat, they drink, they sleep… they even poop! But most importantly, they go through the tedious process of a messy break-up. Which is bad enough as it is but what if you’re a celeb, dating another celeb, you break up… and then STILL have to work together!? Well, it happens a lot more often than you may think.

The thing is, a lot of these celeb romances started when the actors first began working on a show together — such as Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki, who dated secretly for years while filming The Big Bang Theory. And let’s face it, folks, anyone who has EVER fallen in love with a coworker can attest that dating someone they work with isn’t always the best idea, is it? And some of these former couples are proof of JUST how bad it can be when these workplace romances fall through.

These celebrities still worked with their ex even after their relationship came to a (somewhat messy) end.

It can’t have been AT ALL easy, but hey, these guys are professionals! So they still managed to get the job done…

    1. Kourtney Kardashian & Scott Disick

Now, if you know me at all folks, you’ll know that I absolutely despise the Kartrashians, which is why I figured I’d get this one out of the way first.

After more than an entire decade together, Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick decided to call it quits back in 2015. According to E! NewsKourtney was tired of Scott’s drinking and partying (but in Scott’s defense, if I had married into that family all I’d do is drink too), and she wanted to do what was best for their children, Mason, Penelope, and Reign.

Of course, they’re still in each other’s lives because of their children, which is nice, but they also continued working on Keeping Up With the Kardashians together, which meant that much of their split was caught on camera… because hey, money, right?

    2. Rachel Bilson & Adam Brody

If you were as big a fan of The OC as I was then you would have been absolutely HEARTBROKEN when Seth and Summer didn’t actually work out in real life. Way back In 2006, People reported that Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody had split, reportedly after growing apart… and tbh it STILL hurts.

But because they played love interests on The OC, they had to keep filming the show … and we really hope it wasn’t too awkward for them. Adam is now married to Gossip Girl star Leighton Meeser – which is still pretty cool – whereas Rachel and ex Hayden Christensen broke up in 2017 after 10 whole years together.

    3. Heidi Klum & Seal

    Splash News

In 2012, Heidi Klum and Seal filed for divorce after more than eight years of marriage, citing that there were major problems between the two of them. But just because their marriage ended didn’t mean that they could stop co-parenting or doing business together. Eventually, Heidi and Seal worked together on America’s Got Talent.

    4. Chris Evans & Jenny Slate

    Fox Searchlight Pictures

It’s ridiculously hard to imagine what it must be like to promote a movie when an ex is attached to the project too, but these two had to deal with that issue (nightmare) firsthand. In March 2018, Chris admitted that he and Jenny had broken up for good in an interview with the New York Times, leaving fans of their relationship SUPER bummed and heartbroken. They’d literally just taken a break in their relationship when their movie, Gifted, hit theaters — meaning they still had to do press tours together.

During an interview with Vulture, Jenny admitted that it was a really, really hard time in her life. “I watched You’ve Got Mail so many times, it was unbelievable,” she said. Damn girl, that’s my go-to feel-good movie too!

    5. Charlize Theron & Sean Penn

Charlize Theron and Sean Penn met and fell in love while they were both filming The Last Face, alas, things went wrong before the movie even made it to theaters in 2016. They still had to be around each other while they promoted the movie, which as you can imagine was pretty freakin’ awkward. Later that year, however, Charlize told WSJ magazine that their breakup wasn’t as dramatic as tabloids would have people believe… let’s face it, it never is, is it?

“We were in a relationship and then it didn’t work anymore,” she told the mag, E! Newsreports. “And we both decided to separate. That’s it.” Talk about a SNOOZEfest.

    6. Katie Holmes & Joshua Jackson

    The WB Television Network

In case ya missed the memo, yes, Joey and Pacey WERE dating in real life … but sadly, it wasn’t meant to be. Reportedly, Katie Holmes called Joshua Jackson her first love wayyy back in a 1999 Rolling Stone interview that later developed into a close friendship. But after they split, however, they still had plenty of Dawson’s Creek to continue filming — at least four more years. I bet that was tons of fun!

    7. Justin Timberlake & Cameron Diaz

I won’t lie, this one killed me a little. It’s certainly easy to forget that Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz were ever even a thing, but they TOTALLY were. And when they had to work together on Bad Teacher years later (great movie, by the way, I 100% suggest you see it), it seemed like a very positive experience. In fact, Cameron told Us Weekly that she loved having the chance to work with him.

“No, it’s great. Justin and I have always had a good laugh together, and to make a movie where we get to have a laugh together, and there really was no one else who was more perfect for this part,” she told the magazine in 2011.

Does this mean Justin is as wonderful as we assume he is? OF COURSE, HE IS. HE’S AN ANGEL.

    8. Tarek & Christina El Moussa

When Tarek and Christina El Moussa divorced in 2016, we were worried that would mean the end of Flip or Flop (oh, the horror!) To make matters even worse, as TMZ reported at the time, one of their final fights included police being called to their home, prompting Tarek to allegedly take a gun and flee the house — only stopping when a helicopter caught up to him and told him to drop his weapon… WHAT? What a wild freakin’ ride.

But since then, the couple has continued to work together on their HGTV show (?????), keeping things professional even though their romantic relationship has ended. I’m not sure if that’s mature behavior or just downright idiotic, however.

    9. Jennifer Garner & Michael Vartan

Long before she was ever with Ben Affleck (YES, there was a time before that!), Jennifer Garner dated her Alias costar, Michael Vartan. Unfortunately, they broke up before the show was done filming (are you seeing a theme here yet?).

That meant that they had to continue working together — but that’s showbiz, baby!

    10. Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson

After starring in the first Twilight movie, (and if you say you weren’t OBSESSED with those things back in the day, you’re lying) Kristin Stewart and Robert Pattinson were definitely an item. But it all crashed and burned when Kristin was caught cheating (I know I know… the absolute AUDACITY of it all) with her Snow White and the Huntsman director, Rupert Sanders.

She and Robert then had to do press for the final Twilight movie, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2, and Robert later told Esquire that the aftermath of their split was the hardest, because he had to keep reliving it.

“The hardest part was talking about it afterwards,” he admitted in the interview, according to People. “Because when you talk about other people, it affects them in ways you can’t predict.”

As for me, I never forgave that tramp for breaking poor Robert’s heart, and still despise her to this day. Now THAT’s petty.

    11. Amanda Seyfried & Dominic Cooper

After meeting and falling in love on the set of Mamma Mia!… which is possibly one of the greatest “How We First Met” stories of all time, Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper dated for three years before calling it quits.

However, they still had to work together on Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which hit theaters last year, obviously. During an 2011 interview with Elle, Amanda admitted that their breakup was really hard on her, especially because he was actually seeing someone else. YIKES.

“I got my heart broken pretty hard,” she said. “After that, it’s really hard to open myself up to a new person. Really hard.”

Eventually, she did, because Amanda is now married to Thomas Sadoski.

    12. Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony

After seven whole years of marriage, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony made the choice to divorce in 2011. Since then, they’ve worked together several times — including on her Spanish language album, Por Primera Vez, in 2017, which has yet to be released. When talking to W! in 2016, JLo said she’s constantly working to get along with Marc after their split.

“When my marriage ended, it was not easy to find forgiveness,” she said. “It wasn’t the dream that I had hoped for, and it would have been easier to fan the flames of resentment, disappointment and anger. But Marc is the father of my children, and that’s never going away. So I have to work to make things right. And that is, by far, the hardest work I do.”

I gotta tell ya folks, these celebs are a whole lot more mature than I am!

    13. Nina Dobrev & Ian Somerhalder

Being that these Vampire Diaries costars broke up after three years together while the show was still filming, it would be easy to assume that going back to work together would be incredibly awkward. However, even though they were over, they still got the job done — and now, they’re even… friends! What a while concept.

In fact, Nina even hangs out with Ian and his wife, Nikki Reed, proving that there’s truly no negativity between them because of their former relationship.

    14. Jennifer Lawrence & Nicholas Hoult

Jennifer and Nicholas dated for three glorious years after meeting on the set of X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2011. I thought for SURE they would last forever (and I freakin’ hoped for it too), however in 2014, they decided to go their separate ways (SOB) — but still had to work together on X-Men: Apocalypse.

Earlier this year, Nicholas told Evening Standard that filming with Jennifer is totally not a big deal. After all, it has been five years since they were together.

“It’s pretty similar to Skins. We’re a big family. We’ve been doing those movies since we were 20 years old,” he said. Jesus, talk about feeling freakin’ old.

    15. Chad Michael Murray & Sophia Bush

If you were as obsessed with One Tree Hill as I am (I still watch it on loop once a year), you’ll be aware that Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush had what seemed like a fairy tale romance when they got married after meeting on the set. HOWEVER (prepare to have your heart re-broken) they separated only five months after they tied the knot … and they starred on OTH together for SEVEN more years.  SEVEN! Can you imagine!?

In 2018, Sophia opened up about the split on Dax Shepard’s Armchair expert podcast, specifically how it changed going to work for her.

“There was no space to self-reflect,” she revealed. “There was like, ‘This is my integrity, this is my job. I will not falter for one second or one minute ever on this set. I will be the most f– professional person anyone has ever seen.”

She also accused producers of being “exploitative” about their divorce, saying they ran TV ads about it at the time as a way to stir up drama and buzz surrounding the show.

    16. Blake Lively & Penn Badgley

Another one which broke my damn heart. While filming Gossip Girl, Penn and Blake dated for three years before splitting in 2010, leaving them with two seasons of the show left to film post-breakup. And according to what executive producer Josh Safran told Vanity Fair years later, they were so good at being professional about their relationship that no one who worked on the show knew they’d ended things for months.

“The shocking thing was, I found out on the set of the Season 2 finale that Blake and Penn had broken up months before,” Safran said. “They kept the breakup hidden from the crew, which you could never do now. I don’t even know how they did it. They kept it from everybody, which is a testament to how good they are as actors. Because they did not want their personal drama to relate to the show.”

    17. Kaley Cuoco & Johnny Galecki

    CBS

And last buy by no means least, how could I not mention the most heartbreaking one of all? Kaley and Johnny’s Big Bang Theory characters (SPOILER ALERT) may have ended up together, but in real life, it wasn’t quite the case. They secretly dated for two years and continued working on the show together like nothing had even happened. And even though their relationship didn’t work, their friendship is still going strong, which is super nice to hear!

“We’re dear friends, still,” Johnny told CBS Watchaccording to Us Weekly. “Kaley’s not just an ex, she’s a part of my life.”

    How sweet is that?!

So, apparently, there really is a way you can be mature when going through a break-up. In fact… you can even remain… dare I say it? Friends. THEN AGAIN, If I was being a billion dollars per movie/episode, I’d probably be able to swallow my pride and get freakin’ on with it too!

What do you reckon folks, did any of these shock you? Did you even know these celebs had been dating? Let me know in the comments! And don’t forget to share this with your friends an family too! AAx
