Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s kids were present on set

Considering that Overboard is largely about family, it’s fitting that Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s real children were with them on set whilst the film was in production. They had been a couple since 1983, although to this day the two of them have never married. Hawn was previously married to musician Bill Hudson, and Russell to Season Hubley. Both had children from these past marriages, but were keen to have one big family. Hawn’s daughter Kate Hudson has declared, “Kurt is a saviour who came into my life. He’s been there for everything,” and she considers him her true father.

Roddy McDowall was an executive producer on the film

Roddy McDowall co-stars in Overboard as Joanna’s long-suffering butler Andrew. McDowall had a long, prolific career as an actor, dating back to his childhood in the 1930s, but Overboard was his sole credit as executive producer. McDowall received an associate producer credit on several of the films in which he played the lead role between 1948 and 1950, and was also credited as full producer on a behind the scenes documentary produced for 1967 classic Planet of the Apes.

The film was inspired by a true story

As much as the premise of Overboard seems like one of those things that only happens in the movies, the story was surprisingly inspired by a real-life incident of a female amnesiac in Florida. Details are scarce, but news reports from 1981 tell a story of a ‘Jane Doe’ found stranded in a park and not even knowing who she was. According to a New York Times article from 1980, “News reports of her plight and a national television appearance prompted hundreds of calls to the hospital from anxious families who thought she might be their missing daughter.” The woman was later identified as Cheryl Tomiczek and subsequently reunited with her family, but chose to keep the name ‘Jane Doe’ afterwards.

You might recognise Dean’s pick-up from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Kurt Russell’s Dean Proffitt drives a beat-up blue Dodge pick-up truck in support of his carpentry business – but if you ever suspected you knew the car from another movie, you aren’t wrong. The very same vehicle appears in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989), tailgating the Griswold family in the opening sequence. It’s not exactly known how the same truck ended up featuring in both films, though it’s likely a typical rental option for filmmakers, but the devil is in the detail. If you look closely at the truck in Christmas Vacation, you can see that the driver-side door has been daubed over in black paint. The paint is in the exact shape and position as Dean Proffitt’s logo.

Joanna’s yacht would later appear in Indecent Proposal

Slightly higher up the vehicular glamour scale is Joanna’s yacht, dubbed the SS Immaculata in the movie, but in fact known as the Attessa – and, years later, it would be featured in another notable Hollywood movie. The yacht would be used again in 1993’s Indecent Proposal, as the pleasure cruiser of Robert Redford’s wealthy lothario. The ridiculously luxurious vessel came complete with crystal chandeliers and velvet cheetah upholstery, and at times was also called Yecats and Huntress. If this palace on the water wasn’t opulent enough already, the boat was later lengthened to 142 ft and a helipad was added on the aft deck.

Jeffrey Wiseman’s Pee-Wee Herman impersonations were ad-libbed

Dean’s son Joey, played by Jeffrey Wiseman, has a tendency to speak in an impersonation of Pee-Wee Herman – but this particular character trait did not come from the script. Director Garry Marshall encouraged the cast to improvise, and young Wiseman, who was reportedly a bit of a handful on set, came up with the Pee-Wee voice. Wiseman continued his work as a child actor until 1992. Outside of Overboard, his most prominent role was Mitch Murphy in Home Alone, the chatty neighbour who looks into the airport van and accidentally gets tallied in the headcount of children, leading to Kevin being left behind.

John Candy was considered for the role of Dean’s buddy Billy

Character actor Michael Hagerty takes a key supporting role in Overboard as Billy, best friend of Russell’s Dean, but the filmmakers had originally courted a bigger name for the part: John Candy. Unfortunately, production on Overboard clashed with Candy’s work on Planes, Trains & Automobiles, so he had to decline. Now professionally known as Mike Hagerty, the Billy actor never achieved the same level of fame as Candy but has worked steadily as a character actor. Hagerty’s best-known roles include building superintendent Mr Treeger in Friends, plus guest roles on the likes of Cheers, Seinfeld, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Somebody Somewhere.

The Arturo and Katerina story wasn’t in the script, and the screenwriter hates it

Once Dean and Annie (as Dean renames her) come to fall in love, he woos her with an old sea legend about lovers lost at sea. This, however, was not in Leslie Dixon’s script, and she is highly disdainful of the plot device, telling Vanity Fair in 2017 that it “embarrasses me to this day.” Even more strangely, no one seems certain where the story came from. The characters of Arturo and Katerina may originate in an opera by Carlo Coccia named Caterina di Guisa, which sees the two characters illicitly fall in love, much to the disdain of Caterina’s husband, Henry I of Guise.

The film has been remade four times, including as a South Korean TV show

They’re remaking everything these days, and a hugely watchable comedy like Overboard is no exception – though few films have the dubious honour of having been remade four times. Western audiences are most likely to be familiar with 2018 gender-reversed remake, starring Anna Faris as a working class single mother and Eugenio Derbez as a spoiled rich playboy. However, Overboard has inspired other remakes around the globe, including a 2006 South Korean TV series Couple or Trouble (the latter of which twists the concept by having both lead characters fall overboard, though only one develops amnesia).

Anna Faris sought Hawn and Russell’s blessing to remake the film

When it came to the 2018 remake, the pressure was certainly on for Anna Faris. “I had a lot of emotions about it,” Faris told SheKnows in 2018. “It’s one of my favorite all-time movies that I have! And I was nervous about filling such big shoes – Goldie Hawn has been such a hero of mine.” When Russell and Hawn learned that a new version of Overboard was in the works, and that Faris was attached, the couple invited the younger actress out to dinner. Faris promised to “honor the movie that they made,” and at the end of the meal she not only got the blessing of her two idols, they even paid for dinner!

It was the last film Russell and Hawn would make together for 31 years

Although Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn have had a remarkably solid relationship over the past three decades, their careers have never quite been in sync. In fact, they’ve only starred alongside each other four times. Although the pair met while working on The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, neither had top billing, making it easy to discount it from the list of Hawn-Russell collaborations. Their next picture, 1984’s Swing Shift, was critically acclaimed but a box office flop. Overboard was more successful on release, but only really built its reputation on VHS and TV. The couple would not reunite on screen until Hawn’s brief cameo opposite Russell’s Santa in 2018’s The Christmas Chronicles, and they would reprise their roles in 2020 sequel The Christmas Chronicles 2.

Kurt Russell’s father has a cameo

Acting is a family business for Kurt Russell. Not only did his own children follow him into the industry, his father Bing Russell had also trod that ground before him as a jobbing actor appearing in the likes of Rawhide, The Twilight Zone, The Monkees and I Dream of Jeannie, as well as small roles in films including The Magnificent Seven. Bing Russell has a small cameo role in Overboard as Sheriff Earl. He would make a few more brief film appearances in the years that followed, including a bit part in another of Kurt’s films, Tango & Cash. His last appearance would be in 1990’s Dick Tracy, before he passed away in 2003 aged 76.

It was Ray Combs’ first – and last – film

Overboard features a cameo from Ray Combs as a cop in the hospital, who demands proof that Dean is really Annie’s husband. Combs was also a stand-up comedian, but achieved his greatest level of fame as the host of popular gameshow Family Feud. Combs hosted Family Feud for seven years, and never made another film appearance. Tragically, he would die by suicide in 1996 after being fired from the gameshow.

It was poorly reviewed at the time, but has become a cult classic since

It’s hard to believe today, especially for any Goldie Hawn fans out there, but Overboard didn’t exactly get a rosy reception on its release. Variety slated the film as “an uninspiring, unsophisticated attempt at an updated screwball comedy that is brought down by plodding script,” and damning all the performances beyond Hawn and Hagerty as “pedestrian.” However, while Overboard’s box office was unremarkable, it holds some insight into the film’s future cult status: it made $1.9 million in its first weekend, and then continued to increase its takings, and then increased them again. In short, positive word of mouth saved the film, and it did even better on home entertainment.

It was influenced by a 1974 Italian film which was later remade by Madonna

As well as being inspired by the real-life Cheryl Tomiczek/Jane Doe story, Overboard also took inspiration from an earlier movie: director Lina Wertmüller’s 1974 Italian production Swept Away, in which a rich yacht owner and a member of her crew are stranded on a deserted island. This earlier film is considerably more serious than Overboard, and brings the political elements of the scenario to the forefront. Years later Swept Away was remade by Guy Ritchie with his then-wife Madonna in the lead, and it was a notorious critical and commercial disaster.

Reese Witherspoon loves the film so much it’s her email address

Some might say that Reese Witherspoon (star of the Legally Blonde movies, and an Oscar winner for Walk the Line) is the Goldie Hawn of her generation. Witherspoon is by her own admission a huge fan of Hawn, and has revealed that her very first email address was [email protected]. Witherspoon is such a fan of Hawn that in 2017 she was chosen to present Hawn and Russell with their stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Witherspoon said at the ceremony that Hawn “lights up the screen. She lit up my life. She’s changed my life, and she’s quite simply my idol.”

The screenwriter is the granddaughter of two esteemed artists

Overboard screenwriter Leslie Dixon is the granddaughter of Dorothea Lange, the famous photographer. Born in 1895, Lange is best known for her photojournalism during the Great Depression, most famously 1936’s Migrant Mother. As if her grandmother’s artistic success wasn’t enough, Dixon’s grandfather was Maynard Dixon, a noted landscape artist. The screenwriter (whose other credits include Mrs. Doubtfire and 2003’s Freaky Friday) has said of her grandparents, “[their] work goes at Sotheby’s for a million, but these artists made no real money in their lifetimes.”

There’s a brewing gaslighting controversy over the film

In today’s more politically sensitive climate, Overboard has been re-assessed in an unfavourable light by some commentators. The film has been accused of promoting ‘gaslighting,’ the abusive practice by which someone encourages their partner to doubt themselves and their reality. Screenwriter Leslie Dixon dismisses this. “There’s nothing wrong with Dean other than the fact he doesn’t know how to be a mother,” she told Vanity Fair in 2017. “He knows how to be a father, but he’s too permissive, and the kids are running wild… What Dean does to Joanna, the audience kind of roots him on.”

Hawn and Russell once re-watched the film instead of having sex

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn say they rarely re-watch their own work, but that one time they decided to watch Overboard had a massive impact on them. Hawn explained on the Late Late Show: “You know how sometimes you forget why you fell in love? I remembered everything, and why I fell in love. It was really something to be able to watch that.” “We were going to make love,” she continues, “so that put the whole kibosh on that…” though in hindsight “it was actually a turn on.” As for Kurt Russell, he said of the episode in a separate Men’s Health interview, “You remember things you didn’t realize you remembered, and you’re completely inundated with the sweep of memory.”

The film might have derailed a presidential campaign

Credit: Sara D. Davis/Getty Images

Did you know that Overboard made Barack Obama president? Well, that might be an overstatement, but there’s still an interesting story here. In the party scene on the yacht, there are several glamourous women dancing. One of these women is Rielle Hunter, a film producer who would go on to change the course of American history. Hunter is best known for having an extramarital affair with then-Senator John Edwards in 2007. Edwards had been the Democratic Party’s nominee for Vice-President in 2004, and was seeking the presidential nomination in 2008. However, the scandal derailed Edwards’ career, leading to Obama winning the nomination and ultimately the election.

The boat rocked the crew to sleep

All of Overboard’s yacht sequences were actually shot on the water, which caused a unique problem for the cast and crew. Working on a film set involves a lot of sitting around and waiting, and the rocking motion of the yacht kept causing members of the crew to fall asleep, making them miss their cues.

All the sets were authentic

Oftentimes, films will have sets custom built, which makes it easier to position cameras and sound equipment, as well as allowing for full customization of everything in the scene. All the sets used in Overboard, on the other hand, were completely authentic, including the yacht and bowling alley.

Garry Marshall regards the film one of his funniest

Credit: Alberto E. Rodriguez / Staff via Getty

Garry Marshall has penned and directed a lot of films across his career, including Pretty Woman, The Flamingo Kid and The Princess Diaries, as well as creating the sitcom Happy Days. Although most of Marshall’s projects are distinctly comedic, he has stated that he still regards Overboard as “one of the funniest pictures” he’s ever worked on.

Garry Marshall’s son is in the film

The Coast Guard spotter that appears towards the end of the film is Scott Marshall, the son of screenwriter and director Garry Marshall. Although these days he seems more focussed on directing than acting, Marshall has played minor roles in a number of films, most of which were also directed by his father.

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn hosted a BBQ for the cast and crew

Credit: Sven-Ole Thorsen via Getty

One of the most celebrated aspects of Overboard is the palpable chemistry between Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, the result of the couple’s closeness in real life. Throughout production the rest of the cast and crew also grew close, with Russell and Hawn even throwing a BBQ for everyone working on the film.

Sven-Ole Thorsen makes a cameo

A Danish actor and former strongman, Sven-Ole Thorsen is known for playing large, imposing characters. While Thorsen often appears in B-movies, he has also appeared in AAA titles including Lethal Weapon, Gladiator and The Hunt for Red October. Thorsen makes a cameo in Overboard, as Stayton’s bodyguard Olaf.

A lot of the lines were improvised

After Overboard came out, director Garry Marshall revealed that he actively encouraged his actors to improvise, particularly Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, since he trusted their instincts. The chemistry between Russell and Hawn means that, for the most part, it’s impossible to detect when they’re riffing and when they’re going off the script.

Anna Faris was the perfect choice for the remake

Actors in remakes of beloved films always face an uphill battle when it comes to winning over fans of the original, due to inevitable comparisons to the actors who first portrayed their characters. This seemingly wasn’t a problem faced by Anna Faris, who starred in the 2018 remake of Overboard, with production designer Brent Thomas stating that the actress “looks and sounds” almost exactly like a young Goldie Hawn.

There are references to The Best of Times

The year before starring in Overboard, Kurt Russell starred in The Best of Times. In that film, the wife of Russell’s character is called Gigi, and there’s a footballer known as “Dr. Death.” Both of these bits of trivia are referenced in Overboard, with the letters “GG” painted on the club house, and Dean’s kids referring to “Dr. Death.”

There’s an adult film in the background of a shot

In the scene in which Grant is singing into a seashell, there’s a stack of videos in the background of the shot. One of these is the euphemistically titled The Pink Clam, an adult film made in 1986. Whether this was placed there deliberately, or just happened to end up in the shot, is unknown.

Captain Karl isn’t a reference to Pee Wee Herman

The captain of the yacht in Overboard is named Captain Karl, which many took to be a reference to Captain Carl, a recurring character in Pee Wee Herman’s sketches. While this assumption is understandable in light of the fact that Pee Wee Herman is parodied elsewhere in the movie, the name was, in fact, entirely coincidental.

The film was loosely based on Houseboat

As well as drawing inspiration from a real life event in which a woman suffering from amnesia was found in a park in Florida, Overboard is loosely based on 1958’s Houseboat. Starring Cary Grant and Sophia Loren, Houseboat tells the story of an American politician and widower who moves into a rundown houseboat with his three children and an Italian maid.

Hector Elizondo plays the garbage scow skipper

Veteran actor Hector Elizondo makes an appearance in the film as the skipper of the garbage scow. While the role is smaller than most of Elizondo’s other parts, the actor likely took the job because he is close friends with Garry Marshall, having appeared in all 18 of the director’s movies.

Dean Proffitt’s truck appeared in John Carpenter’s They Live

After appearing in Overboard, but before appearing in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, the truck driven by Dean Proffitt pops up in John Carpenter’s They Live. The truck is parked in a homeless camp, and the words “Dean Proffitt Construction” are still visible on one of the doors.

The film is popular with boat owners

Given the fact that events of Overboard revolve around a 130-foot luxury yacht, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the film is popular with boat owners. Kurt Russell has even stated that Overboard and Captain Ron are the two films that seem to be onboard every boat he’s ever been on.

Overboard is one of three films in which Russell and Hawn costar

Credit: Rodin Eckenroth / Stringer via Getty

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn met on set in 1966, but they didn’t start dating until 1983, when they reconnected while starring together on Swing Shift. In 1987, the couple costarred again in Overboard, and in 2020 they collaborated on The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two. Russell and Hawn have appeared together in several other films, but only in minor roles.

There’s a reference to A Clockwork Orange

In the scene in which Annie tries to use a chainsaw, she accidentally cuts off a scarecrow’s head, with a closeup revealing a star shaped patch over its right eye. This is a reference to the makeup worn by Alex DeLarge, the sociopathic protagonist of Stanley Kubrick’s highly controversial adaptation of A Clockwork Orange.

It was Jeffrey Wiseman’s first film

Jeffrey Wiseman’s portrayal of Joey Proffitt – which includes his now famous ad-libbed Pee Wee Herman impersonation – was reasonably well received, and led to further roles in Home Alone and The Babe. Unfortunately, however, Wiseman’s acting career petered out, and it appears he is no longer in the showbiz industry.

The film was influenced by Swept Away

Another film that Overboard screenwriter Leslie Dixon drew inspiration from is 1974’s Swept Away, an Italian film about a wealthy woman who is stranded on a desert island with a member of her yacht’s crew. An English version of the film starring Madonna and directed by Guy Ritchie was made in 2002, although it ditched the original’s themes of the clash between communism and capitalism.

There’s a mention of the original’s story in the remake

The 2018 gender-flipped remake of 1987’s Overboard makes a direct reference to its predecessor. During the scene in which Leonardo is diagnosed with amnesia, the doctor comments: “Elk Cove has had only one other case of amnesia. A young pretty woman back in the 1980s” (the original Overboard was made in 1987).

The Coast Guard’s ship appears in two other films

The Coast Guard’s ship that chases down the S.S. Immaculata near the end of the movie is the USCGC Point Evans. As well as being a genuine Coast Guard’s ship, the Point Evans also makes appearances in both Baywatch and The Conspirators. In 2001, the ship was sold to the Philippine Navy, where it currently operates under the name BRP Alberto Navarette.

The yacht was later destroyed by a fire

The 130-foot yacht used for the S.S. Immaculata was built in 1984 by maritime engineering company Kong & Halvorsen. Originally named Attessa, the yacht was named Yecats at the time Overboard was filmed, and would later be renamed yet again, this time as Huntress. In 1998, the boat was destroyed by a fire, although fortunately all of the passengers and crew survived.

There’s a Hindi remake

The 1992 Hindi film Ek Ladka Ek Ladki is largely a remake of Overboard, although it’s notably darker. Instead of falling off a yacht, protagonist Renu loses her memory after a speedboat accident orchestrated by her uncle, who has been embezzling money to pay off his debts. Said uncle also tries to murder Renu, along with Raja (the stand in for Dean) and his three young nephews.

Annie is short for Joanna

After duping an amnesiac Joanna into believing that she is his wife and the mother of his children in an attempt to extract revenge over her previous poor treatment of him, Dean “renames” her Annie. This is actually a rarely used shortening of the name Joanna.

Garry Marshall makes a cameo

Garry Marshall is known for inserting himself into the backgrounds of scenes in his TV shows and films, usually as a drummer. Overboard is no exception. In the bar scene, Marshall can be seen in the background of the shot, playing drums with the band.

Dean blatantly breaks the law

Whatever your position on the ethics of Dean Proffitt manipulating an amnesiac for personal gain, one thing is for certain: it’s highly illegal. As well as potential kidnapping charges, Dean would almost certainly have found himself in legal hot water for falsifying documents to “prove” that Joanna is his wife.

The Coast Guards got drunk filming a scene

In the scene in which Billy Pratt (played by Mike Hagerty) is drinking with the Coast Guards, both real Coast Guards and real beer was used. By the time the scene had been filmed, both Hagerty and the Coast Guards were reportedly absolutely loaded, with shots of them drunk making it into the film.

Wyatt Russell took his first steps on set

Credit: Amy Sussman / Staff via Getty

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn’s relationship was in full swing by the time they worked together on Overboard, and both had their children with them on set. It’s even rumored that Wyatt Russell – now an actor himself – took his very first steps on one of the movie’s sets.

The names Katerina and Arturo also appear in the remake

The love story that Dean relays to Joanna involves two characters named Katerina and Arturo, a pair of lovers lost at sea. While Leslie Dixon publicly loathed the addition of the story to her script, the sequel paid homage to the scene by using the same names for two characters in a Mexican story.

Grant’s bow and arrow continuity mistake

Early in the film, when Dean is working on Joanna’s wardrobe, Grant is seen playing with a bow and arrow on the yacht’s deck. As he draws the arrow back it clearly has a blunt tip, but in the next shot it’s suddenly got a large suction cup attached to the end.

The film was not a major box office success

Overboard had a worldwide gross of $26,713,187. Given its $22 million budget, the film’s financial performance wasn’t groundbreaking, but it has since become a cult favorite, earning far more in affection than in box office dollars.

Goldie Hawn was not onboard with the 2018 remake

Goldie Hawn is quite clear about her thoughts on the Overboard remake. Speaking to Variety, she conveyed her love for the original by saying, “Overboard was really perfect just as it was.” Hawn further elaborated on her general sentiment towards remakes, admitting, “I’m not a fan of remakes, period.” In her eyes, classics should remain untouched, as they already have their distinct magic.

There’s a continuity error with Annie’s purse strap

During a scene where Annie strides into a classroom, there’s a subtle continuity oversight. The position of Annie’s purse straps keeps alternating. At times, they’re draped over her shoulder, while in other moments, they’re held in her hands.

The bowling alley set is completely real

For the bowling alley scene in Overboard, filmmakers opted to keep its appearance authentic. They did not modify the location for the movie, including the sign on the television, which remained as is from the original location.

Roddy McDowall doubles as executive producer and butler

Not only does Roddy McDowall grace the screen as Andrew, the Butler, he also donned the hat of an executive producer for Overboard. His involvement in both the behind-the-scenes and on-screen roles showcases his multifaceted contribution to the film.

The screenwriter attributed the film’s success to Goldie and Kurt’s chemistry

Screenwriter Leslie Dixon has no doubts about the magic behind the film’s success. She said, “Overboard has endured because Kurt and Goldie are the two cutest individuals who have walked the planet. I don’t mean it in a diminishing way, I just mean the chemistry that they had on screen is very rare… I lay it all on Goldie and Kurt. They are the movie.”

John Candy was considered for the role of Billy

While it’s hard to picture anyone else than Mike Hagerty as Billy, John Candy was once a contender for the role. However, Candy had to pass on the opportunity because he was already committed to another 1987 classic, Planes, Trains & Automobiles. One can’t help but wonder what his portrayal would have been like.

Joanna and Grant watch the TV show Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous

In a fitting scene on the yacht, Joanna and Grant are seen lounging in bed, engrossed in the TV show Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Hosted by Robin Leach, this popular show, which ran from 1984 to 1995, offered viewers a glamorous peek into the opulent lives of the wealthy.

The character Billy Pratt wears a baseball cap with Kurt Russell’s surname

The character Billy Pratt can be spotted wearing a baseball cap emblazoned with Kurt Russell’s surname, which is a fun wink to the audience considering Russell’s leading role in the film.

A moment in one of the key scenes was dubbed

In the poignant scene where Dean’s children scramble out of the truck and dash after Annie’s limousine, sharp listeners might notice something amiss. The shout of “Mom!” doesn’t quite match the on-screen action. This suggests that the line was probably added in post-production to enhance the emotion of the scene.

It didn’t take very long to film

The process of filming a movie can often span many months, but the Overboard team managed a notably brisk pace. Starting the shoot on April 9th, they worked diligently and managed to have it all wrapped up by July.

The leading duo were easy to cast

Finding the right pair to play Dean Proffitt and Joanna Stayton/Annie Proffitt was surprisingly effortless. As Leslie Dixon recounts, the casting process was a breeze: “I’ve never before or since had any actor say yes so quickly,” Dixon says. “Kurt and Goldie were newly in love, and it shows on screen. They’re so cute together that the audience just loves the film.”

The S.S. Immaculata made its way to another iconic film

While most recognize the yacht, the S.S. Immaculata, from its prominence in Overboard, it also sailed its way into another 90s classic: Indecent Proposal. Whether used as a nod to its cinematic past or merely a coincidence, it’s fun to trace its journey through film history.

The remake’s release date was moved around

When setting release dates, it’s always a strategic game. The Overboard remake was initially set to release on April 20, 2018. However, to avoid a direct clash with the box office titan, Avengers: Infinity War, the film’s release was moved a week earlier to April 13, 2018. A wise move considering the massive audience draw of the Marvel universe.

The remake was a box office success

While critics gave the 2018 remake mixed reviews, it did turn a big profit. Pulling in an impressive $50.3 million domestically and another $40.9 million internationally, the film boasted a worldwide gross of $91.2 million. Not too shabby, considering its modest production budget of $12 million!

There was a continuity error with a teddy bear

Eagle-eyed fans might notice a minor inconsistency in a scene involving Annie and the school principal. As Annie interacts with the principal, the teddy bear on her desk seems to have a life of its own. Its position jumps between shots, serving as a fun little quirk for those who enjoy spotting movie mistakes.

Leslie Dixon was involved in the remake

Not only did Leslie Dixon write the original Overboard script, but she also returned for the 2018 remake. Collaborating with Greenberg and Bob Fisher, Dixon once again brought her unique touch to the beloved rom-com, ensuring continuity between the original and its modern counterpart.

The filming of Overboard wasn’t restricted to just one scenic location

Filming commenced in Fort Bragg, California, and moved to Mendocino County. Subsequently, the crew shifted to San Pedro Bay and then to the coastal town of Newport, Oregon. Additionally, Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, California, became a significant spot for the shoot. The production wrapped up in Marina del Rey, completing the Californian tour.

Goldie Hawn was nominated for a comedy award for her part in the film

The delightful humor Goldie Hawn infused into her role didn’t go unnoticed. In 1988, Hawn’s impeccable comedic timing and unforgettable portrayal earned her a nomination for an American Comedy Award. She was recognized in the category of Funniest Actress in a Motion Picture.

South Korea aired a TV adaptation

The film’s intriguing premise crossed borders and inspired the South Korean television industry. In 2006, the TV show Couple or Trouble, directed by Kim Sang Ho and featuring the talented Han Ye-seul and Oh Ji-ho in lead roles, aired as a loose adaptation of the film.
