Who doesn’t love going to the movies? There’s something special about going to the theatre, picking out a snack (AKA smuggling one in), and taking a seat in that big, dark room. Characters come to life right before you, almost like magic.

Part of the magic that we don’t see, though, is all of the work that stunt doubles put in. They’re the reason that we have our most action-packed, magic-filled, fantastic scenes in our favorite movies. They’re a huge part of the film, yet we don’t know who they are. Even more than that, stunt doubles put their lives on the line for our viewing pleasure. They deserve some recognition.

Check out these photos of actors with their body doubles so you can finally see the people (or super humans) behind your favorite scenes!

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron has had a variety of stunt doubles for different roles. In this photo, she poses with Alicia Vela-Bailey, who was used in the action sequences for a music video Theron was in. The music video for “Crossfire” by Brandon Flowers features Theron/Vela-Bailey fighting sword-wielding masked figures to save the singer. Theron is always perfect in the heroine role, but not without the help of Vela-Bailey.

John Travolta

John Travolta has played a huge range of characters, from the mother of Tracy in Hairspray to Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction. His versatility continues to show in the films like The Forger. Travolta’s stunt double in the film was Nick Loren, who also had a small acting role in it.

Mark Ruffalo

Now you see him, now you see two of him! Mark Ruffalo poses with his Now You See Me stunt double, Anthony Molinari. Although a movie about magicians doesn’t seem like the typical action-packed film, it features a variety of stunts that made Molinari a key part. Some stunt doubles look only vaguely like the actor they portray, but Ruffalo and Molinari could be twins.

Jennifer Lopez

You’re going to need to do a double-take when you look at Jennifer Lopez’s stunt double. Yes, your eyes are not deceiving you; Lopez had a male stunt double, Daniel Arroyo when shooting her “Follow the Leader” music video. It features a series of complicated stunts and parkour moves, really showcasing Arroyo’s skills. However, knowing she used a double is disappointing; I was content in thinking that JLo is just a superhuman.

Patrick Dempsey

It’s strange seeing Patrick Dempsey with a stunt double because I’m not used to seeing him in action movies in general. But in 2011, Dempsey was featured in the third installment of the Transformers franchise, Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Here, Dempsey is pictured with his stunt double on set. The two-sport matching tattered outfits, complete with faux dirt and injuries.

Reese Witherspoon

Here’s another pair that could probably be twins. For the 2015 comedy Hot Pursuit alongside Sofia Vergara, Reese Witherspoon played a police officer. Naturally, any cop role most likely features car chases and parkour-filled running sequences, making a stunt double mandatory. Whoever cast Marny Eng as Witherspoon’s double did a great job, if you ask me.

Shia Labeouf

Shia Labeouf seems like a completely different person now than he was in the Transformers movies, doesn’t he? Here’s Labeouf and his stunt double for the film, Colin Vollenweider. The two don’t exactly look the same, but it’s Transformers, so I guess that’s not a big deal. Their matching outfits and dirt stains help, though.

Robert Pattinson

Our favorite sparkling vampire poses with his Twilight stunt double, Paul Darnell. Whether you love or hate the movies, there’s no doubt that there were some serious stunts involved. You know, super-strong vampires and all. Darnell is a pretty close match, but I’m most impressed by how perfect they got his hair.

Shailene Woodley

They use a lot of the same stunt doubles in Hollywood, as this double has already been mentioned. In Divergent, Shailene Woodley’s double was Alicia Vela-Bailey, the same woman who doubled for Charlize Theron. The movie is another action-heavy film featuring numerous fight scenes, running, and intense building-jumping. Surprisingly, Vela-Bailey nailed the fighting auditions with no martial arts training; her background is actually in dance and gymnastics.

Christian Slater

The Forgotten is a fitting name for a TV series that I had never heard of. Christian Slater starred in this show, which only aired for one season on ABC. It was centered around a group of amateur detectives who solve crimes by identifying victims that the police cannot, and then going after their killers. Slater is pictured with his stunt double, who legitimately looks like he was just copied-and-3D-printed.

Regina King

Regina King was a recurring character in the crime drama Southland when it aired from 2009 to 2013. King played a detective on the show, which was more focused on the characteristics and personal lives of the officers. This is unlike your typical solve-the-crime-step-by-step cop drama. King is pictured with her double, Dartenea Bryant. They nailed this match!

Uma Thurman

Who could mistake that iconic yellow outfit? Check out Uma Thurman on the set of Kill Bill: Vol. 1 next to her stuntwoman, Zoe Bell. They look similar and have common facial features, which is rare for a stunt double. Bell is a superstar in the stunt double world, featured in heavy hitters like Final Destination, Death Proof, and Iron Man 3. She is also an actress.

Chris Evans

Behind every superhero is a superhuman stunt double. Captain America: The Winter Soldier was no exception, as Chris Evans is pictured here with his stunt double in the film. Their matching outfits and similar hairstyles would fool me at first glance. Oh, and check out the Winter Soldier himself in the background.

Kate Winslet

Did you have any idea that Kate Winslet needed a stunt double in Titanic? I didn’t, but here she is! Sarah Franzl is Winslet’s gorgeous double. Franzl has quite the stuntwoman track record, appearing in movies such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Fast and Furious 6, and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Andrew Garfield

With great power comes great responsibility, and with great responsibility comes a great stunt double. Andrew Garfield utilized a double, William Spencer, for his role in The Amazing Spiderman 2. The two are pictured here rehearsing a scene in Madison Square Park in New York City. Spencer is not only a stuntman but also an internationally renowned skateboarder.

Tom Hardy

OK, this is one of the stunt double-actor pairings that freaks me out. Tom Hardy and his Mad Max: Fury Road stuntman Jacob Tomuri look like mirror images of each other. Tomi has done work in other Hollywood favorites The Revenant, Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit. He is also an actor, appearing in Avatar and Peter Pan.

Carrie Fisher

One of our beloved Carrie Fisher’s most famous looks in the Star Wars franchise is this bikini combo in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. Fisher and her double, Tracey Eddon, take a break from shooting in the hot Arizona sun to get a nice tan. Eddon has appeared in other films like Mission: Impossible, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and Doctor Strange.

Bruce Willis

Most actors use a variety of stunt doubles, and Bruce Willis has, too. However, there is one particular stuntman Willis works with the most, and that is Stuart Wilson. Wilson has appeared in numerous films such as Willis’ double such as A Good Day to Die Hard, Looper, and The Expendables 2. Aside from performing stunts, Wilson also coordinates them and choreographs fights.

Tom Cruise

Although Tom Cruise utilized a stunt double in the film Knight and Day, he did perform some of his stunts, including that notable motorcycle scene. However, he left the more difficult stuff to his double, Casey O’Neill. O’Neill has been involved in the stunts for a range of movies and shows like Guardians of the Galaxy, Twin Peaks, and Westworld.

Quvenzhane Wallis

In the 2014 remake of Annie, Quvenzhane Wallis starred as the title character at just 10 years old. However, her body double was an adult. This was possibly due to Wallis’ age, as young actors are limited in how much time they can spend working. Still, for a fully grown adult, Wallis’ double does make a pretty good stand-in.

Hugh Jackman

Logan was one of the highest-grossing movies of 2017, but that would not have been possible without Hugh Jackman’s stunt double. Eddie Davenport was that double and put in the extra work to do so. It paid off, as Logan is one of the best-reviewed X-Men movies of all time. Davenport has also stunt doubled in other films like Real Steel and Captain America: The First Avenger.

Brad Pitt

Ah, remember when Hollywood had a massive zombie phase? That was when World War Z premiered and thrived. Brad Pitt starred in this horror thriller, accompanied by his double, David Paterson. After hair and makeup, Paterson is a spitting image of Pitt, complete with a dirty blonde wig and identical facial hair.

January Jones

X-Men: First Class actress January Jones and her stunning stunt double were seen together on set back in 2010. Jones’ character, Emma Frost/White Queen, is cold as ice, so of course, she needed an outfit to match. Jones and her double were decked out in an all-white ensemble, polished off with knee-high boots and a big furry hat.

Sarah Michelle Gellar

Everyone knows Sarah Michelle Gellar’s famous role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Anyone who has seen the show can easily tell why a stunt double would be necessary. Sophia Crawford was Gellar’s stunt double for the first four seasons. She is a stuntwoman and martial artist who has also appeared in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Poseidon, and doubles for the Pink Ranger in the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers series.

Emma Watson

Even Hermione Granger needs a stunt double sometimes. Or maybe three. According to Emma Watson’s co-star Rupert Grint, Watson needed multiple stunt doubles for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 due to her education commitments. Watson was still attending Brown University while this film was being made, so they had to shoot around her a lot.
