Science Proves Peeing In The Shower Could Save The Planet And Your Pennies

Science, that old spectacled know it all figure looming in the corner, has spoken once again, this time to shed some wisdom on the age-old debate of whether or not you pee in the shower... and apparently you should.

Yeah, I'm nailing my colours firmly to the mast in favour of not peeing in the shower as I always have done. However, there is now a slightly more scientific argument in favour of being disgusting and peeing in the shower where you stand to have a wash... yeah I said it!

The main reason why you should consider fouling your shower drain is due to the fact that it will mean you use less water... so if you don't pee in the shower, you're killing the polar bears, you heard it here first!

(...please don't take that too literally!)

According to an article from IFL Science (now prepare yourself for some hardcore wee mathematics!):

'An average flush for a modern, Western-style toilet uses 6 liters (1.6 gallons) of water, and the average adult pees about seven times every 24 hours. That means that each day of weeing takes 42 liters (11.1 gallons) of toilet water to flush away. Assuming that people urinate the same way every single day, this means in just one year, the average person uses 15,330 liters (4,050 gallons) of toilet water.'

However, according to the article, if you pee in the shower you could massively lower this figure and help preserve depleting water resources worldwide:

'Say that this means that you only pee in a toilet six, not seven times, per day. This means that in just one year, you’d save 2,190 liters (579 gallons) of toilet water. Extrapolating this to the entire US population, that’s 699 billion liters (185 billion gallons) of water saved.'

Now that is how you science!

In fairness, I'm still unsure whether I'd be able to do it, but heck if it's for the sake of the planet then it's surely got to be worth it... and maybe I could save some money on water bills!

However, apparently, I'm in the minority with my anti-shower-urination policy as several polls have found that the majority of Americans do wizz while washing.

The Huffington Post published an article which reported that 61% of Americans take a tinkle as they cleanse themselves, and a poll on Buzfeed showed that 81% of people are more than happy to piddle in the basin.

I don't know what it is about peeing in the shower but I just can't imagine that I'd ever be able to bring myself to do it. Oh wait, that's because I don't want to have a wash while standing in a puddle of piddle. And, to those who say that it's just going straight down the drain, that is of no consolation to me!

It is hard to argue with being able to save that much water a year though...

One helpful commenter alternatively suggested that the solution as, 'If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down.' But again, I'm not sure I can see an entire nation embracing this, can you?
