Dwayne Johnson has excellent hair now that he’s shaved it off, but the same cannot be said of his former persona The Rock. Even though his haircuts were short and tidy during his halcyon WWE days, he didn’t exactly look stylish or intimidating. Johnson clutched at straws all the way into the early 2010s when he embraced the bald look. It is a coincidence that his film career truly took off when he decided to ditch the hair? Maybe, but it doesn’t look like it.

Bruce Willis

Bruce Willis is arguably the most famous bald actor of all time, but his two most famous roles had him sporting hair. In both 1987’s Die Hard and then in 1999’s The Sixth Sense, Willis held on to the locks he had. However, since then Willis has mostly rocked the menacing bald look and has done so to great effect.

John Travolta

John Travolta’s quiffed jet-black hair in 1978’s Grease was so iconic that he was forced to wear wigs resembling it for decades after he lost it. The actor’s use of rugs was an open secret in Hollywood for years but when he finally bit the bullet and decided to embrace his bald head, fans were still taken aback. Danny Zuko, hairless? It can’t be. Well, it is, and he looks all the happier for it!

Jon Cryer

Fans of Two and a Half Men may be shocked to hear that Jon Cryer’s hair wasn’t actually his. For years, Cryer’s hair on the show was “an elaborate illusion”, with the actor jokingly telling Conan O’Brien in 2013 he had “like four hairs” painted over and sprinkled with powder. When the show finally wrapped, Cryer opted for the cool bald-head-and-stubble look which has served so many of his bald brethren well across history.

Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel L. Jackson was inspired to embrace hair loss by his longtime wig consultant Robert L. Stevenson, who told Deadline: “He was losing his hair at one point and said, ‘If I just shaved it all off could we still create looks with wigs?’ I said, ‘Sam, we can basically do anything with wigs.’ That’s when we started getting into it.”

Stanley Tucci

Stanley Tucci called time on his fading hairline in his 30s. “Well, it takes a while, because you don’t lose your hair all at once,” said Tucci in a 2010 interview with Time Out. “You kind of wish you would; it would be so much easier. I had classic male-pattern baldness, which is not necessarily very attractive. So you do get to the point where you just say, forget it.” Tucci has played numerous bald characters since, many of whom have been fashion experts and style icons!

Jason Statham

Jason Statham began his career as a competitive diver, believe it or not, before moving into modelling and then acting. By the time he burst onto the Hollywood scene in 1998’s Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, he was suffering from male pattern baldness. Today, he is famous for his bald look and doesn’t go anywhere without it.

Woody Harrelson

There is perhaps no other celebrity who seems as comfortable with who they are and how they look as Woody Harrelson, with his everpresent grin and mischievous eyes. Being bald isn’t a problem for Harrelson, it’s just another part of life. With that said, the actor and comedic legend hasn’t shied away from wearing wigs for select jobs, such as True Detective.

Joe Rogan

Pictures of Joe Rogan with hair look like something ripped from the pages of a “We Put Hair On Bald Celebrities To See What They Look Like!” article. In other words, it just doesn’t look natural. The image of him hunched over a table in front of a mic, bald and bold as brass, is too enduring and powerful. Rogan did once try medication to prevent hair loss, but he soon embraced it once and for all.

Billy Joel

Jon Cryer, Bruce Willis, John Travolta, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Sam Jackson, Stanley Tucci, Billy Joel – They didn’t choose the hair loss! They were always balding since the world’s been turning! “I always had crappy hair anyway, and I used to torture it with a hairdryer and all this stuff,” Joel confessed to Howard Stern in 2014 about his decision to welcome hair loss.
