Morante de la Puebla wipes away the 'tears' with bloodied handkerchief.

Morante de la Puebla, a 39 year old Spanish bull-fighter has come under heavy fire for using a handkerchief to wipe away the bloodied 'tears' of a bull as the innocent creature suffers immense pain for the sake of hollow applause and unnecessary violence. Yep, it's 2019 and we're still talking about hyper-masculine men in frilly outfits stabbing a beast slowly into submission with over-the-top flourishes to riotous applause, until the beast can take it no longer where the aforementioned frilly psychopath parades their submission some more and eventually stabs it in the neck - because apparently we need that in today's society.

Some people have called the move respectful, while other more sane people such as the League Against Cruel Sports called it simply, 'Horrific. Barbaric. Cruel.' via Twitter.

Leader of Spain's Animalist Party Against Mistreatment of Animals, Silvia Barquero Nogales also made this statement:

'Only a malicious and perverse mind could torture an animal until the blood pours down its legs and then wipe its face with a tissue. The matador is just disguising his lack of empathy. Abolish bullfighting now!'

The issue of bullfighting has been raging for a long time, and mainly boils down to the argument between whether it is simply animal cruelty, or an important part of Spanish tradition and should be remembered as such.

Look, it is obviously a Spanish tradition and should be remembered as such... but that doesn't mean it should be done!

There are plenty of traditions across the world in various countries that are not allowed by today's standards but aren't allowed 'cause they're barbaric; so instead, people are simply taught about them so they aren't forgotten, it's how memory and history works.

The protestations from some devoted followers of the 'sport' say that the matador's decision to wipe the bull's face is a sign of true respect for the animal.

However, if you're expecting me to believe that a bull can understand a complex emotional situation such as a man dressed like a cheap Christmas cracker being cheered on by thousands of people for stabbing it while waving a flag around as respectful, then you're mistaken.

Why not try respecting it by not killing it?

The matador in question, Morante de la Puebla, has actually retired from the sport three times for various reasons, and we can only hope that he will retire again soon.

It was not only political groups who vented on the issue. The news also got a particularly heated rise from comedian and After Life star, Ricky Gervais who took to twitter fairly heatedly to shame the matador.

Gervais has long been passionate about his hatred of animal cruelty, and thousands of people have vehemently rallied behind him against the cruel sport calling for it to be banned once and for all.

Hopefully, we can soon finally consign this horrifically, and unnecessarily, cruel sport to the history books. However, I imagine that sadly there'll be a lot more bulls tortured like this before that happens.

Surely we are better than this?

I can't wait until we no longer have to see images of these animals suffering so needlessly. Do you think that it's time we put this barbaric sport behind us? Let me know in the comments. AAx
