Credit: David Shankbone via Wikimedia Commons

Back in 2014, Kanye West was still largely respected and seemed to have his egomania in check. However, when his work was compared to that of late rap legend Tupac Shakur, West furiously declared, “Tupac wasn’t no musician. He was an actor… He was the most overrated rapper in history and you come up in here comparing him to me? A real rapper…a real star.”

Credit: Fin Costello/Redferns/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images

Roth is quoted as having once remarked, “Music journalists like Elvis Costello because music journalists look like Elvis Costello.”

Paul Weller called Freddie Mercury the c-word

Credit: Ian Gavan/Richard Creamer/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images

In a 2006 interview (which also saw him badmouth Sting, Bono, Bob Geldof and David Bowie), Weller remarked of Mercury, “He said he wanted to bring ballet to the working classes. What a c***.”

Rick James said Prince “wanted to be white and taller”

Credit: Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images

When funk pop pioneer Rick James was at the peak of his popularity in the early 80s, along came an ambitious newcomer named Prince, and an intense beef soon built between the two. James would later describe Prince as “a little short ego-ed f***er who I had a feeling didn’t like people of his own race and wanted to be white and taller.”

Kurt Cobain called Guns N’ Roses “really talentless people”

Credit: Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images

When Nirvana became one of the biggest rock bands around in the early 90s, frontman Kurt Cobain was not at all comfortable being likened to the similarly huge Guns N’ Roses. Cobain said of GNR, “they’re really talentless people, and they write c**p music, and they’re the most popular rock band on the earth right now. I can’t believe it.”

Nick Cave called the Red Hot Chili Peppers “garbage”

Credit: Patrick Riviere/Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images

In 2004, Nick Cave was famously quoted as saying, “I’m forever near a stereo saying, ‘What the f*** is this garbage?’ And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers.” Happily, the California rockers had a sense of humor about Cave’s comments, and in 2022 bassist Flea (an outspoken fan of Cave) performed alongside the Australian singer-songwriter on stage.

Boy George called Madonna “a horrible human being with no redeeming qualities”

Credit: Gareth Cattermole/Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

Boy George shot to fame with his band Culture Club in the early 80s, around the same time Madonna broke big. It seems there was no love lost between the two pop icons. George once described Madonna as “a vile, hideous, horrible human being with no redeeming qualities. There’s nothing nice about her. I’ve never heard anyone say anything nice about her at all.”

Tom Waits said The Eagles are “as exciting as watching paint dry”

Credit: Richard Creamer/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images

They’re about as exciting as watching paint dry… Their albums are good for keeping the dust off your turntable, and that’s about all.”

When Kroeger mocked Slipknot’s masks, Taylor retorted, “I’ve been voted Sexiest Dude In Rock wearing a mask. You’ve been voted Ugliest Dude In Rock twice without one. Stick that up your a**.”

Anton Newcombe cut deep into Eric Clapton’s personal life

Credit: Michael Buckner/Kevin Winter/Getty

“People talk about Eric Clapton,” Anton Newcombe of the Brian Jonestown Massacre once said. “What has he ever done except throw his baby off a f***in’ ledge and write a song about it?” Is this the cruellest thing anyone has said about anyone? Possibly. It’s certainly the cruellest thing a musician has said about another musician.

Elton John compared Keith Richards to an animal

Credit: Leon Neal/Rich Fury/Getty

After Richards criticised him for capitalising on the death of Princess Diana in a 1997 interview, the Rocketman singer replied: “I’m glad I’ve given up drugs and alcohol. It would be awful to be like Keith Richards. He’s pathetic. It’s like a monkey with arthritis, trying to go on stage and look young.”

Robert Smith would do anything to spite Morrissey

Credit: Gareth Davies/Iyla Savenok/Getty

The Cure’s Robert Smith and the Smiths’ Morrissey seem like they’d make great bedfellows, but no, they absolutely despise each other. Ol’ Rob hates him so much he’d spite his foe’s dietary habits. “If Morrissey says not to eat meat, then I’ll eat meat,” he said. “That’s how much I hate Morrissey.”

Ian Brown claimed Bono was trying to be a white savior

Credit: Stuart Wilson/Stephen Lovekin/Getty

Ian Brown of The Stone Roses wasn’t pleased with what he saw from U2 frontman Bono at Live Aid. “He looked out and [saw] that black girl in the middle of all them people,” Brown said. “And she’s from Hackney or something, and he was like, ‘Here’s a great shot for me around the world to show I’m Mr Africa.'”

Noel Gallagher fat-shamed Jack White

Credit: Stuart Wilson/Rich Poke

Back in 2005, the Oasis guitarist had some choice words for the White Stripe’s Jack White after he penned a tune for Big Pop. “Jack White has just written a song for Coca-Cola,” Gallagher said when asked about his thoughts on White. “End of. He ceases to be in the club. And he looks like Zorro on doughnuts.”

Courtney Love called Dave Grohl “mediocre”

Credit: Frazer Harrison/Neilson Barnard/Getty

Courtney Love has gotten bad press her whole career. Even the Nirvana bandmates of her late husband Kurt Cobain don’t like her, but – according to Love – it’s just jealousy. “As for that drummer,” Love said. “Well, he’s hit on me so many times. He’s just a very very conflicted guy about me. He’s just a sub-mediocre kind of guy who does this ‘nice guy’ nonsense.”

Mark E. Smith threw a bottle at Mumford & Sons

Credit: Jim Dyson/Amy Sussman/Getty

The late Mark E. Smith of The Fall was a real misery guts. Just ask Mumford & Sons. “There was this other group warming up and they were terrible,” the Fall singer said. “I said, ‘Shut them c**ts up!’ And they were still warming up, so I threw a bottle at them … I just thought they were a load of r****ded Irish folk singers.”

Lily Allen accused Cheryl Cole of being a gold-digger

Credit: Eamonn McCormack/Getty

It was a weird beef but a beef all the same. Around the mid-2000s, in Britain anyway, singers Cheryl Cole and Lily Allen were big names with bigger mouths. Their feud came to a head when Allen joked, “Taking your clothes off, doing sexy dancing and marrying a rich footballer must be very gratifying. Your mother must be so proud. Stupid b***h.”

Christina Aguilera wasn’t sure of Lady Gaga’s gender

Credit: Monica Schipper/Emma McIntyre/Getty

Lady Gaga is a certified pop icon today, but when she first came around she was widely mocked for her quirks, including how she plays with gender boundaries. Wayne Coyne hated Arcade Fire’s “pompousness”

Credit: Mark Metcalfe/Michael Loccisano/Getty

“I get really tired of their pompousness,” the Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne said of Arcade Fire. “We’ve played some shows with them and they really treat people like s**t. People treat Arcade Fire like they’re the greatest thing ever and they get away with it. They have good tunes, but they’re p*****, so f*** ’em.”

Keith Richards poked fun at Mick Jagger’s manhood

Credit: Stephen Lovekin/Ethan Miller/Getty

Mick Jagger was said to be up in arms with the 2010 release of Keith Richards’ autobiography Life. Why? Because he’d poked fun at his manhood, or lack thereof. “Marianne Faithful had no fun with Mick’s tiny todger,” Keith wrote. “I know he’s got an enormous pair of balls, but it doesn’t quite fill the gap.”

Van Morrison wasn’t swept up in Beatlemania

Credit: Michael Loccisano/Michael Ochs/Getty

Van Morrison has brought joy to pretty much everyone but himself. The Northern Irish singer is notoriously grumpy, and even the Beatles are not safe from his cranky ire. “The Beatles were peripheral,” he once said. “If you had more knowledge about music, it didn’t really mean anything.”

Elvis Costello slated Morrissey’s songwriting

Credit: Bryan Bedder/Mike Pont

I Have Forgiven Jesus, We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful, and Kick the Bride Down the Aisle. Just some of Morrissey’s songs. Great titles, right? That’s what Elvis Costello thinks. “Morrissey writes wonderful song titles,” he said of the singer. “But sadly he often forgets to write the song.”

Frank Sinatra called Elvis Presley ugly and desperate

Credit: Michael Ochs/Getty

Ol’ blue eyes, who apparently had links to the mafia, slated Presley’s music (and rock and roll generally) as “the most brutal, ugly, desperate, vicious form of expression is has been my misfortune to hear.” Presley was so maddened by this he called a press conference to defend the genre as “the greatest music ever.”

Johnny Borrell accused the Kooks of pandering to radio

Credit: Samir Hussein/Eamonn McCormack/Getty

Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell may have rhymed “America” with “America” four times in their hit song America, but he knew his way around a sentence on a press junket. “It sounds like the band are literally rolling over, sticking their a**e in the air and begging Radio 1 to f*** them,” Borrell said of their chart rivals, the Kooks.

Paul Young compared Boy George to a fruit

Credit: Arnold Jarecki/Getty/Eva Rinaldi/Wikimedia Commons

80s pop star Paul Young was never one for having beef with his British contemporaries, but there was one exception: Culture Club’s Boy George. Young and George may have performed together on the Band-Aid Christmas single in 1984, but they weren’t pals. “He reminds me of an aubergine,” Young said. “All shiny and plump.”

Paul Simon dissed Art Garfunkel right in front of him

Credit: Natalie Wyman/Larry Busacca/Getty

When Simon and Garfunkel were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, Art Garfunkel tried to end years of tensions by praising Paul Simon’s songwriting as having “enormously enriched my life.” Simon replied, “Arthur and I agree about almost nothing, but it’s true, I have enriched his life quite a bit, now that I think about it.”

Axl Rose called Slash a “cancer”

Credit: Amy Sussman/Neilson Barnard

And he wasn’t talking about star signs. After Slash left Guns N’ Roses in 1996, Axl Rose declared, “Personally, I consider Slash a cancer and better removed, avoided - and the less anyone heard of him or his supporters, the better.” Band manager Doug Dolgstein revealed in 2015 that Slash’s decision to work with Michael Jackson had upset Rose, who was sexually abused as a child.

James Blunt called Damon Albarn posh

Credit: Tim Whitby/Ian Gavan/Getty

James Blunt might make awful music, but his social media and press presence has sent him viral throughout the 2010s and beyond. Dave Davies called his brother Ray a “vampire”

Credit: Michael Loccisano/Anthony Harvey/Getty

Prior to the Gallaghers, there were Ray and Dave Davies of British rock legends The Kinks. Well, Ray sucks me dry of ideas, emotions and creativity.”

Jack White basically called The Black Keys plagiarists

Credit: Jason Kempin/Getty

The White Stripes frontman isn’t the biggest fan of his Ohio counterparts The Black Keys thanks to their apparently derivative blues style. “I’ll hear TV commercials where I think it’s me,” White said. “Half the time, it’s the Black Keys.” Thankfully, the two parties made peace in 2015.

Marc Almond joked about strangling Jimmy Sommerville

Credit: John Philip/Sean Gallup/Getty

Just a year after Soft Cell singer Marc Almond and Communards frontman Jimmy Sommerville collaborated on a cover of Donna Summer’s I Feel Love in 1984, the relationship fell apart. “He thinks I should do more for the gay community,” Almond said. “And he’s right. I should strangle him.” In a 2015 interview, however, Sommerville spoke highly of making the song.

Credit: Pascal Le Segretain/Jeff Spicer/Getty

James Hetfield mistook Mötley Crüe for ladies of the night

Credit: Neilson Barnard/Ian Gavan/Getty

Mötley Crüe – all bark and no bite. Even by hair metal standards (slimmer than paper), they were to recording studios what a toaster is to a bath. It wasn’t just their music that attracted snipes from critics, though, but their image, too. Metallica’s James Hetfield once quipped: “One time we saw some hookers but when we got closer we realised it was Mötley Crüe.”

Bob Dylan had no time for Led Zeppelin

Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty

Peter Grant, Led Zeppelin’s manager, approached Bob Dylan at a concert in the mid-70s by saying, “Hello Bob, I’m Peter Grant, I manage Led Zeppelin.” After a short pause, the famously blunt Dylan said, “I don’t come to you with my problems do I?” Short, sweet, devastating.

Billy Joel didn’t think Christina Aquilera could sing

Credit: Michael Loccisano/Getty

Christina Aquilera likes people to know she’s a singer, often in really annoying, hypersonic ways. This cheesed off one of America’s proudest musical sons, Billy Joel, no end. When quizzed on her in 2001, the Piano Man singer said, “Pick a note and sit on it for a while, OK?”

Gene Simmons said Carlos Santana was a shoegazer

Credit: Frazer Harrison/Theo Wargo/Getty

Platform-wearing, fire-breathing Kiss bassist and singer Gene Simmons has high expectations when it comes to a stage show, saying, “I’m sick and tired of these bands like Carlos Santana looking at his shoes and thinking that’s a rock concert. Get off the stage.” Santana later dismissed Kiss, and their pyrotechnics, as “Las Vegas entertainment.”

Etta James did not like Beyonce singing her song

Credit: Alberto Rodriguez/Kevin Winter/Getty

She had no business up there, on a big ol’ President’s day, singing the song that I’ve been singing forever.”

John Lydon says… something about The Offspring

Credit: Noam Galai/Corey Perrine/Getty

“Punk is like looking at a mirror,” John Lydon of The Sex Pistols and Public Image Limited once said. “I already have a mirror so I don’t need The Offspring to remind me how gorgeous I am.” Does it make any sense? No. Does it need to? No. What Lydon says, goes. That’s punk rock, baby.

Alice Cooper called Marilyn Manson redundant

Credit: Alberto Rodriquez/Frazer Harrison/Getty

In case you didn’t know, shock rocker Alice Cooper invented everything. Before him, there was nothing. After him, only lame imitators. “Marilyn Manson? Yeah, really original,” he said back in 1999. “Stick some make-up on and give yourself a girl’s name. That’s never been done.”

Richey Edwards accused The Levellers of only appealing to posh people

In 1991, Manic Street Preachers frontman Richey Edwards hit The Levellers with one of the most inspired disses in music history, quipping: “You could go to any Levellers concert and stand in the middle and shout, ‘Jeremy!’, and 75 percent of the audience would turn round.” The implication was that the band primarily appealed to well-to-do people (Jeremy being a supposedly ‘posh’ name).

John Lennon compared Paul McCartney’s music to Muzak

Credits: Michael Ochs Archives / Stringer | Joe Maher / Stringer via Getty

While Paul McCartney and John Lennon kept their brewing spat private while The Beatles were still together, once the band split the feud spilled into the public sphere. After McCartney dissed Lennon’s hippy preachiness on a record, Lennon shot back with a diss track of his own, comparing McCartney’s songs to Muzak, the aggressively bland music that plays in public spaces like supermarkets and elevators.

Mariah Carey said she “didn’t know” J-Lo

While the exact details about how Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez’s feud actually started are somewhat vague, it seems like the hate mostly came from Carey. In one of the most infamously shady takedowns in music history, when Carey was asked about her opinion on J-Lo’s records in an interview on German TV show Taff, the Obsessed singer simply replied “I don’t know her.”

Rihanna compared Ciara to a waitress

In 2011, Ciara took to Twitter to vent about an encounter she’d had with Rihanna at a party, describing the Umbrella singer as ‘not the nicest.’ Rihanna clapped back immediately, tweeting: ‘My bad ci, did I 4get to tip u?’ The pair reconciled later that night, although the feud reignited a couple of years later, only to die down once again.

Noel Gallagher described Liam Gallagher as “the angriest man”

When it comes to music industry feuds, it doesn’t get much fiercer than the beef between Noel and Liam Gallagher. The brothers famously hated each other when they were in Oasis together, and the band’s dissolution has done nothing to soothe tensions. Noel once memorably described Liam as “the angriest man you’ll ever meet. He’s like a man with a fork in a world of soup.”

Mark E Smith claimed to have never heard of Suede

Credit: Jim Dyson / Staff via Getty

In 2018, Suede bassist Mat Osman recounted a painful story involving Mark E Smith. Early in Osman’s career, he listened to Richard Skinner ask Smith what he thought of Suede during a live radio interview, only for Smith to reply that he’d never heard of them. This was particularly stinging for Suede as they’d just spent several months opening for Smith’s band The Fall.

Dave Grohl called Courtney Love “ugly”

Credits: Arturo Holmes / Staff | Francois Durand / Stringer via Getty

The spat between Dave Grohl and Courtney Love was brewing long before Kurt Cobain’s untimely death, but the feud escalated in the years following the Nirvana frontman’s suicide. After Love accused Grohl of hitting on her and branded him “mediocre,” Grohl fired back with perhaps the most succinct insult in music history, describing Love as “an ugly f***ing b***h.”

Louis Schneider called Debussy’s work disappointing

Musicians have been taking shots at each since time immemorial. After listening to a performance of Debussy’s composition La Mer, Louis Schneider stated: “The audience expected the ocean. Something big, something colossal, but they were served instead with some agitated water in a saucer.” This might just be the most poetic way of describing something as underwhelming.

Madonna roasted Elton John for wearing a wig

Credits: Ethan Miller / Staff | Belinda Jiao / Stringer via Getty

In 2002, Elton John branded Madonna’s theme song for Die Another Day “the worst Bond song ever,” igniting a beef that would last for years. Kelly Osbourne called Christina Aguilera “disgusting”

Credits: Pool | Randy Shropshire / Stringer via Getty

Kelly Osbourne’s vitriolic feud with Christina Aguilera has led to some genuinely brutal insults. In 2002, Osbourne claimed that Aguilera’s Christmas album was so bad it had made her want to “stab” herself, adding that she’d “seen drag queens who look better.” Osbourne’s nastiest diss, however, came when she labelled Aguilera “one of the most disgusting human beings in the world.”

P!nk slammed Kanye for being a “piece of s**t”

Credits: Andreas Rentz / Staff | Ronald Martinez / Staff via Getty

P!nk isn’t known for mincing her words, as she once again demonstrated when she turned her ire on Kanye West. After West stormed the stage at the 2009 VMAs and wrestled the mic from Taylor Swift, P!nk took to Twitter, where she branded the Gold Digger rapper ‘the biggest piece of s**t on Earth.’

Jay-Z called Nas “the fake king of New York”

Credits: Rich Fury / Staff | Dia Dipasupil / Staff via Getty

Jay-Z fired the first salvo, branding Nas “the fake king of New York,” and marking the start of a diss-track war. While the pair are both noted for their intricate lyricism, the beef quickly devolved into petty insults, with Jay-Z rapping “your s**t is garbage,” prompting Nas’ to retort “f**k Jay-Z.”

Katy Perry compared Taylor Swift to Regina George

Credits: Dimitrios Kambouris / Staff | Matt Winkelmeyer / Staff via Getty

Perry replied by tweeting ‘Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing’, comparing Swift to the conniving, manipulative high-schooler portrayed by Rachel McAdams in 2004’s Mean Girls.

Richey Edwards hated Slowdive “more than Hitler”

Richey Edwards’ jibe about The Levellers mostly appealing to people called Jeremy was very funny, and pretty harmless. The same cannot be said for the verbal assault he launched against the band Slowdive, whom Edwards professed to hate “more than Hitler”. It’s probably safe to assume that members of Slowdive weren’t overly upset when Edwards mysteriously disappeared in 1995.

Mark Everett accused John Lennon of being a “woman beater”

The Beatles are often held up as a paragon of the ideals of love and tolerance that sprang up out of 60s counterculture, but according to Mark Everett, this was an illusion. According to the Eels frontman, “John Lennon sings about peace because he’s a woman-beater. Hippies are so full of s**t.”

Noel Gallagher insulted both the Kaiser Chiefs and their girlfriends

Credit: Laurence Griffiths / Staff via Getty

Noel Gallagher is known for many things, but restraint is not one of them. They don’t mean anything to anybody, apart from their f***ing ugly girlfriends.”

Zayn Malik described One Direction as “generic as f***”

His time with One Direction might have made him a household name, but Zayn Malik certainly doesn’t look back at the experience with rose-tinted glasses. After quitting the band in 2015, Malik soon began launching diatribes against his former bandmates, describing their music as “generic as f***.” Unsurprisingly, Malik has also claimed he’s not really friends with anyone from 1D any more.

Tupac claimed he’d slept with Biggie’s wife

Although they were initially mutual fans, Tupac’s relationship with Biggie soured after the former was robbed and shot in the latter’s neighborhood. Although The Notorious B.I.G. claimed he wasn’t involved, Tupac remained unconvinced, especially when Biggie then released a record titled Who Shot Ya. Tupac retaliated with his diss track Hit Em Up, on which he claimed to have slept with Biggie’s wife, Faith Evans.

Kathleen Hanna insinuated that Courtney Love’s baby was addicted to drugs

Credits: Jamie McCarthy / Staff | Nicholas Hunt / Staff via Getty

The vicious shot was delivered after a show in 1995, with Hanna muttering: “Where’s the baby? In the closet with an IV?” to Love backstage, which – perhaps unsurprisingly – led to a physical altercation.

P!nk threw subtle shade at Christina Aguilera

Credits: Andreas Rentz / Staff | Frazer Harrison / Staff via Getty

Michael Jackson called Prince “overemotional”

Credits: Justin Sullivan / Staff | Michael Ochs Archives / Stringer via Getty

As two veritable titans of pop, it was perhaps inevitable that Michael Jackson and Prince would develop a rivalry that occasionally spilled into open hostility. In a 1988 recording, Jackson described Prince as his “opponent” and accused him of being “overemotional, rude, competitive and nasty.” It’s possible that these opinions were influenced by the fact that Prince twice rejected a request to collaborate.

Meek Mill accused Drake of using a ghostwriter

Although Drake and Meek Mill collaborated on a record in 2012, it’s safe to say the relationship deteriorated in the following three years. In July 2015, Mill put out a tweet requesting that people stop comparing him to Drake, accusing the One Dance rapper of using a ghostwriter. The allegations caused a furore that split the hip-hop community, with rappers, producers and fans all rushing to take sides.

Solange attacked Jay-Z in an elevator

In 2014, TMZ posted CCTV footage of Solange attacking Jay-Z in an elevator, with Beyoncé notably making no effort to reign in her sister’s violent outburst. It’s since been speculated that the attack was spurred by Jay-Z’s cheating, which wasn’t public knowledge at the time. While there’s no audio in the video, you can bet that Solange matched her actions with some strong words.

Roger Waters called David Gilmour’s lyrics “third-rate”

In a 1987 interview with Rolling Stone, Roger Waters finally shed light on the simmering tensions that had grown within Pink Floyd over the preceding years. When questioned about his insistence on taking creative control over the group’s songs, Waters replied that his bandmates’ lack of talent left him no choice, adding that that David Gilmour’s songwriting efforts were “third-rate”.

Discussing Manson, the Nine Inch Nails frontman stated: “He is a malicious guy and will step on anybody’s face to succeed and cross any line of decency.” Reznor has also accused Manson of fabricating stories in his autobiography.
