Oh boy, grab your Kleenex and strap on your emotional water wings 'cause this one is a doozy!

Rocky (pictured above, left) and Spencer (above, right), had been each other's partner in crime for over ten years according to their owner Beth Fisher:

Pictured below: Rocky and Spencer top and tailing on the couch and being generally too pure for this world.

'They had never spent a night apart [...] Rocky and Spencer slept in the same bed, ate from the same bowl and always walked together when they went out.'

Tragedy struck, however, when Rocky was at the vet's, it was discovered he had developed a cancerous tumor, and that it was too late to begin treatment.

The family had to make the decision to end Rocky's suffering, and if you've ever lost a pet you will know the pain that the family must have been going through!

It wasn't just the humans in the family who took Rocky's departure hard though; Rocky's brother Spencer took the loss harder than anyone else and would repeatedly wander around the house looking for his departed brother.

Crying yet? 'Cause I sure as heck am!

'Since Rocky passed, Spencer has been getting up in the night to wander the house looking for his brother,' Beth said in an interview. "And then he starts crying because he can’t find him."

The family had put Rocky's ashes near to Spencer to try and keep the two close, but with dog's limited understanding of the cremation process, something more tangible was needed.

The answer came in the form of a pillow with Rocky's face printed on it!

And judging from these adorable pictures, it looks like the present worked a treat!

According to Beth Rocky now never sleeps alone, but curls up with the picture of his brother for comfort:

'Spencer has been cuddling into the pillow since it arrived, carrying it from the sofa to his own bed. He seems a lot more settled now he’s got something to cuddle into.

'I don’t think Spencer will ever get over Rocky’s passing, but I hope he’s able to learn to go on without him [...] We’re hoping Spencer is able to take comfort in his new pillow, and take comfort from all the cuddles he’s getting from his family.'

I think that it's beautiful the lengths this family has gone to, to try and make Spencer comfortable with the loss of his brother.

We can never deserve dogs, but anything we can do to improve their lives is so worthwhile

This story just highlights the impact that our pets not only have on our lives, but on each others lives.

Even though nothing will ever be able to bring Rocky back to Spencer, at least this way Spencer will know that somewhere his brother is with him in his heart *descends into unintelligible blubbering*

Why is it that stories about animals being sad pulls at our heartstrings in a way that nothing else quite does? I'll never forget thinking that Watership Down was a lovely little story about happy rabbits that the kids would love... that was one hell of a rollercoaster of an afternoon.
