Kevin Gatlin (pictured below, left) is the father behind the creation of ‘Playtime Bed Sheets’, which are specially designed bedsheets covered in board games and educational lessons for children who find themselves stuck in hospital.

Gatlin came up with the idea after he was visiting a hospital and saw children in there, which made him think of how boring hospital must be for kids. Thinking of what would happen if his own son were to end up in hospital, Gatlin began thinking of how hospital stays could be made more enjoyable for kids.

Gatlin and his wife had begun throwing around some ideas, and eventually, the revelation came to him. Gatlin explained the moment of inspiration in an interview:

‘My wife used to utilize the bed with our son, they would play board games they would do homework assignments it was the biggest piece of furniture in the room, so on the way home [from the hospital] the ideas just came together.’

Gatlin began meeting with teachers to see what sort of things they thought should go on the bedsheets as well. Two years later, his dreams had become a reality.

The bedsheets feature over 50 interactive games on them and have received widespread positive responses from teachers, doctors, parents, and children alike.

Gatlin said, ‘We put together bedsheets and slumber bags that cover everything from Geography, Math, Science, Grammar, word find games, over-sized game boards… all on a three-piece set.

‘It’s an unfortunate situation that a child is in. [The sheets are] great for the child life coordinator and the nurses and doctors — it gives them a tool that they can use before they just poke the kid.’

Having a child in hospital is a heartbreaking thing for any parent, and for the children it can be scary and boring, so it’s amazing seeing someone going out of their way to try and make hospital a more pleasant environment for sick children!

Gatlin also went on to say that the bedsheets aren’t just ideal for hospital use, but for home use as well as they offer ‘the perfect daytime/night-time alternative to excessive TV watching, electronic devices and boredom.’

The ‘Playtime Bed Sheets’ are currently in over 10 hospitals, and if you purchase a set for your home, the company donates a set to a hospital of your choice according to their website.

Gatlin explained the decision to utilize a child’s bed more effectively as such:

‘To a child, the bed is the most important piece of furniture in their life. It’s not a place just for punishment or only to be used when they’re sick or when it’s time to go to sleep!

‘We want our Playtime Bed Sheets to help create an environment where kids can continue to play, learn, sleep, and heal on their favorite piece of furniture!’
