The closure means that 500 employees are now at risk of redundancy. Charles Wilson, CEO of Tesco UK & ROI, said in a statement: "We want to offer our customers the ability to buy groceries and non-food products in one place and that’s why we are focusing our investment into one online platform.
"This decision has been a very difficult one to make, but it is an essential step towards establishing a more sustainable non-food offer and growing our business for the future.”
However, the news will be more than welcome to shoppers looking to snag a bargain, as Tesco Direct is currently hosting a massive online clearance sale. In order to prepare for its closure on the 9th July, some products are currently on sale at up to 50% off. The website is clearly keen to offload as much stock as possible, since one recent update reads: “More lines added regularly, don't miss out!”
Don't be fooled by the 'Closing Down' tab on the main website, which currently only takes you to view about 30 items. In fact, most of the website is on sale, including TV and mobile products.
So what kinds of deals are available at the moment?
If you're looking for a new TV, then the Sharp 40 inch LC HD smart TV is listed on the site for just £279, down from £349. The TV is rated 4.7 stars out of five by 96 Tesco Direct customers.
Or if it's a laptop you're in need of, one of the best bargains you can find in the section is a whopping £307.28 reduction on an Acer Spin 13.3 inch laptop, down to £359.97, which also gets a five star rating.
Apple products - including iPads - are also reduced in the sale. Shoppes are now able to pick up a 128GB Apple iPad in gold for just £414.71, down from £479.
As well as TVs and other electronic goods, homeware appliances have also received some massive markdowns.
Customers can pick up a Karcher Easyfix Steam Cleaner for a third off at £187.50, which has been rated at 4.7 stars by 13 customers. The steam cleaner promises to leave your home “sparking clean” with no chemicals or scrubbing.
If you've just moved house or are simply looking for a change, Tesco has also knocked money off some of its larger appliances too. One “discreet” Integrated Larder Fridge has had a huge reduction from nearly £500 down to under £300, at £299.99.
We recommend having a browse sooner rather than later, as many of these bargains are likely to be snapped up in the next few days. Happy hunting shoppers!
